Many here have posted on the death of the DSLR. Well, according to Canon and Nikon, that statement may be a bit of an exaggeration?
Canon just released the 1DX MarkIII and Nikon the D780. Nikon also introduced the new Nikon 120-300 2.8 zoom.
Mark Twain said it best, “The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated.”

Just think if these companies didn’t update their models? Would there be even slower sales than the rate of decline they have had over the last 3 years?

Photo quality is purely subjective so the actual camera device doesn’t really matter that much to the millions of people who take pictures. If it’s easy to use and satisfies their sense of a nice picture, any device will do.

Perhaps they just will have to down-size their companies to adjust.

I received my email announcement of the D780 from Nikon yesterday. It was fascinating, after clicking the "read more about it" button, to find Nikon's numerous references in the brochure to what they openly called 'advantages' of SLRs over other technologies. I think many in the marketplace may have jumped to some conclusions that manufacturers, importers, and retailers have not made or even intended.

When you measure the ingredients of success, how much does the mirror count?

The companies have a full audience of SLR non pro photographers. Some may go to a new system and the rest will stay with the SLR and if the camera companies stop servicing them they will stop shooting at some point. The trend now is all new everything it's a lot oh money as the growth of the new cameras to the point of the SLR is a long and expensive road.

Has anyone ever seen a mirrorless camera on the road to failure?

I turned 62 in august of last year, I still have my first DSLR that I bought 12 years ago, a Pentax K100-D Super 6mp camera, over the years I have added a K10-D, KR, K5II, K3, K3II, KP and lastly a K1 MKII. I have never sold a body as I have bought the next one, the k100D and the KR became my travel cameras the 10D was replaced by my K5II, and was my every day shooter, as I got into event photography I wanted a body with dual SD cards so in came the two K3 bodies and the K1 MKII. I have enough bodies and glass between my Pentax and Sigma pieces to shoot any thing that I would like to, some of the camera bodies I picked up at the end of the model run so like the K5II cost me about $750 new. While the DSLR sales are slowing down they still control the market share of camera bodies being sold.

As a side thought from "CHG CANON" the mirrorsess may not be as failure prone but they eat batteries. When will the have a battery pack as the SLR's do. The pack will take away the weight saving they talk about. Not against or for any of this, you just got me thinking or the pro's and cons

That would depend on who you see in the mirror. Is it an arrogant, self serving pompous demeaning person.
Or is it some one who is secure in his own self that he doesn't need to be an A$$ and belittle another person.
