Again thank you for this question. After reading the discussion responses and not having an "A" on my Canon 5DIV, I began experimenting. I found that using C1 in a custom mode I can reset the focus to the shutter button and that solves the problem. Gracias to all. Norm
We have an A+ on our 5D iv. It has a green square around it. It’s the auto mode. It disables BBF or it does on mine at least.

Since going UHH I have learned BFF and like. Only problem is if I want some else using my camera to take a picture of me/us: it takes too much to explain use of BBF .
So I set AE button of my D7200 to BBF, but returned the main shutter button to also autofocus, so the camera will focus both ways.
My question: when I use this and use the BBF keeping it down and take a picture (or BBF focus, let go of button, then take the picture): will the camera slow itself down to focus before taking the picture, or decide: I already am focused, so the focusing via the shutter button will not need to occur anymore. ?

I have never had that problem. When allowing a stranger to use my camera I simply tell them to press this button to focus and this button to take the picture. I haven't had any problem. One waitress that I wanted to take a photo of my wife and me; when I started to tell her about the BBF she said she had that on her camera and it was no problem. The photo was great.

I have autofocus set to continuous that way when some one else is taking the picture I stand next to them and press BBF to set focus on my wife then hand the camera to them and I get in the picture.

When I want a person to take a picture of me or a group which includes me, I (standing where I will be photographed) BB focus on the place where the person will be standing to take the picture, set the camera to Aperture priority at f/11 (for a little more DOF) and show them the shutter release. Simple, and always works.
I also mention that they should get their eye close to the viewfinder to make sure that they get the composition right. Before I did this I usually got a picture which had somebody cut off.

Set camera to 'P' ... don't try to explain BBF to strangers ... non-photographers don't care ...
Also, don't give it to a kid wearing sneakers ... unless you know you can outrun them.
tried that with my Canon; BBF still works on "P". On auto, everything works like point & shoot. I would not let someone else use my camera unless they were already carrying a "real" camera, not just taking pics with a cell phone.

Well, handing the camera off is about the only way I'm going to get a photo of my wife and myself someplace.

Crazy idea. Don't have them use BBF. They should be on AUTO, and use the camera like a point and shoot.
Use Auto or P node when giving them camera, Happy shooting.

Using the shutter button sort of defeats the point of BBF. You set BBF for the shot and then the camera just does what normal setup does. One or the other. Hand people your cell phone instead, that way your camera can be in the picture.

Well that's the whole point when you hand the camera off to someone and don't want to try to explain: center point focusing, spot metering, this button to focus, that button to take the picture...
Just have them snap the picture...
(USUALLY it will be a shot of YOU in it, and only one or two shots.)
