For archival framing you should not use wood. It airs fumes and resines into the photo. Metal frames are best followed by plastic. Oil paintings are a very different matter.

If one wants to use wood frames but still maintain archival quality, one can use frame sealing tape, a metal based tape applied to the rabbet of the frame. The tape protects against acid migration.

Iā€™m looking for a good source for picture frames with a fairly large selection at somewhat reasonable prices. Any suggestions?

I have found a lot of good frames at rock bottom prices at local second hand stores. I just can't see spending commercial framer prices.

I also make my own from scratch or alter the second hand store frames.

Michaels often has 50% off sales, which means they are then only a little overpriced. Good selection, however. If willing to built inventory from many sources, use Google/Firefox/Safari and order on-line. Probably best for minimum prices.

The "art" area, not just empty frames or mats with frames, can be great too, if a bit more money than simply the frame. I did occasionally run into tough-to-remove backings, however

Every frame and mat here, and the two smaller mirrors, are from thrift stores.

I hate to say it but Walmart has 11x14 frames with glass and 8x10 matts. I bought 12 for $40. I have them on my walls in the computer room.

I've used Pictureframes.com for prints up to 80" wide. Shipping was a bit expensive, but anyone shipping something over 80" is going to charge quite a bit.

I go to a World War 2 and Korean War annual picnic. I missed the last one though. I take portraits of them, sometimes alongside their immediate family. I use my Nikon 50mm f1.8G lens on a DX camera. I give the Veterans two free 4X6 photos, that I take to the VFW Building, for distribution of the photos. Occasionally, a couple or three will request an 8X10. They offer to pay for the 8X10 photos, which I accept. And I put them in an 8X10 frame that I purchase from a $1.00 Store. To keep cost down. I call them up, and a member of the family, meets me at their VFW, to get the framed photo. It's worth it for these veterans, who mostly are in 90s now. And came up in hard times during the Depression Era.

Well, you are a good man, and provide a great service to our Veterans. I like your persistence and generosity.

Estate sales often have pictures in contemporary mats and good frames. Easy to repurpose or repaint at far lower prices than new quality frames. If you're handy you can resaw the frame wood to smaller dimensions and make new frames. Or add molding to them to fancy up the frame. Reuse and recycle.
