I have heard similar stories in other media. A music production program I have will not work with Catalina at all one rev back. At least when Microsoft said Windows 10 was not going to support 32 bit, they beat the drum so loud and long that everyone was ready for it. Well, almost ready for it.

There may be a problem with TeamViewer on Catalina. Lots of folks use it, so be warned. Also, when Catalina is ready, it prompts you for a, "new" Apple ID,
think long and hard. If you have used, "JoeBlow@me.com" for your past Apple ID, Catalina won't let you use, "@me.com" for some reason. So I changed to something fictitious, after all, it's just an ID, right? Now,I think I may have to do more than simply reload....DONT UPGRADE TO CATALINA RIGHT NOW..WAIT UNTIL ?????? Everyone is having different problems, my local Mac shop is not thrilled.

I'd be amazed if they required a new apple id - all your purchases you've ever made would be gone. Music, apps, etc... and, at least in the past, Apple does not allow you to transfer purchases from one account to another.

My Mac is a 2014 build so, if mine works, more current builds should be able to handle Catalina.

It's not so much the age of the Mac as the age of the application, Catalina only supports 64 bit applications. Likely the older versions of LightRoom some folks are using will no longer run - ever. Same for the older free(?) versions of PhotoShop suite. If the vendor hasn't updated their software to be 64 bit, it's done.

But, I thought Macs never had any problems. Sorry, but I couldn't help it. 35+ years in computer/networking business and I've never known any brand or manufacturer's systems that didn't have issues from time to time.

I upgraded to the new Mac operating system Catalina today. Took about one hour. I have noticed one glitch so far. I use bridge to import my images. Usually I can use the touch bar to increase the image size to full screen. Not anymore. When I push the touch bar the screen becomes a jumble of lines and colors. So I called Adobe and spoke with a CSR who told me he could not even share my screen to troubleshoot because Catalina has a glitch that prevents it. He said that Adobe and Apple were aware of the problems and were working on them. This is a cautionary tale for Mac users. Wait to upgrade to Catalina until some time has passed and the kinks are worked out.

ANY OS upgrade is risky for the first few weeks. Beta testers don't catch everything. Real users have to use the system with their unique and often oddball collections of software and peripheral hardware, so every now and then, something isn't anticipated.

I always wait for at least the second minor point upgrade before downloading. I also BACK UP my entire Mac to a bootable external drive, using Carbon Copy Cloner. That way, if I need something that the upgrade hoses, I can do a restart, hold down the Option key until the drive menu appears, and then choose the old system. It will be a few weeks before Catalina 10.15.2 is available... Meanwhile, Mojave 10.14.6 runs as smooth as silk.

iOS 13.1.2 is available for the iPhone, but I'm holding off for 13.2.1.

When I buy hardware, I wait until revision 1 or 2 is available. The first boatload of new Macs or iPhones from China is not always the best choice! As an old IT director friend told me, "The road is littered with the skeletons of early adopters who took the arrows of "gamma testing" in the back."

Here's an interesting link to an OWC blog post:

I agree with you, Jerry. My Mac desktop is still running High Sieerra and it works just fine. A friend who is VERY knowledgable about Apple operating systems advised me years ago to wait some time before upgrading so that the kinks get worked out. His advice has saved me grief.

Some 64-bit apps won't work, either. Apple Aperture is one of them.

Due to under the hood changes in Catalina, some apps will require an upgrade or update to work properly. Catalina is restricted to relatively new machines, too, because the hardware on older Macs doesn't meet minimum specs. After five years of owning any Mac, it's about time to start saving for a new one. Most 2012 models and newer are supported. But you might want to max out your RAM and install an SSD for speed. Those old 5400 RPM hard drives CRAWL.

That's the truth.

Some releases are better than others.

Mac System 7.1 was nice. 7.5 was a mess. 7.5.5 was just okay.
Mac Systems 8.0 and 8.5 were really buggy. 8.1 and 8.6 were reasonably stable.
Mac System 9 was a problem. By 9.2.2 it was pretty stable. Good thing, since that became Mac Classic.

Mac OS X 10.0 was really just a concept.
Mac OS X 10.1 was still just a concept.
Mac OS X 10.2 was beginning to look like an OS.
Mac OS X 10.3 was usable.
Mac OS X 10.4 was glitchy, but by 10.4.11, it was very reliable. (last PowerPC-only version).
Mac OS X 10.5 was glitchy, but it was a transition OS (It ran on Intel and PowerPC chips).
Mac OS X 10.6.8 was the last of the transitional systems. It was so stable, it lasted almost a decade.
Mac OS X 10.7, 10.8, and 10.9 I skipped β€” still used 10.6.8.
Mac OS X 10.10 through 10.14.6 have been mostly fine.

Windows 3.0 was a bit of a mess. By 3.1.1, it was usable, and abandoned for Win95. Win95 was stable by the last service pack.

Win98 was a mess. NT was indecipherable by normal humans.
Win2000 was GREAT, as Windows systems go.
WinXP was great, by Service Pack 2.
Win Vista was HORRIBLE.
Win 7 was quite nice. It reminded me of Win2000.
Windows 8? Well... What was Ballmer thinking?
Win 10 is a work in progress.

The beta for Catalina was available for almost 4 months. It makes me wonder what Adobe, and others, were doing during this period. Obviously not testing their software for compatibility with the new OS.
