How do you know you're not a successful photographer until you've used a mirrorless camera?

If success in photography is capturing a high-quality, sellable or emotion-provoking image, show me a photograph a mirrorless camera can take that my D850 can't.

Not what capabilities that MILC has that my DSLR doesn't, but specifically, what photo it can take that I can't.

IF success in photography is NOT capturing a high-quality, sellable or emotion-provoking image, then what is?

If the newest technology wasn't better, why are they selling it?

Oh I agree with you on most of what you have said (besides DSLR turns to dust as I watched my DSLR all night to see if it does but I think because it has different brand) but things that are sold well are often worse. People love bad things.

I have the same question; who is he and what are his qualification to set himself up as an expert on the subject beyond just being on the Internet with followers like millions of others?

Yep. And right now, hybrids are a blend of the best of both worlds.

Once power supply issues are resolved, electric vehicles will reign supreme.

Whoops, wrong subject matter. Sorry!

Bummer, I guess I have to listen to Jared. I was going to shoot with my D850 this weekend but I guess I'll have to put it on the shelf with my old film cameras and only use my Z6 until I get one of the new Sonys.

Will you even recognize the person you were before you changed to a mirrorless camera?

If you watch Polen's youtube videos, he says that the most important thing in getting good photos is the photographer. A good photographer can get good results with any camera, while a poor photographer will not get good results with the best equipment available. Cameras are tools that produce photos. Some people want the latest and greatest and others will be fine with tried and true. Having GAS and a fat wallet does not mean you will get the best shots.

Hmmmm. Maybe he is there now. Does his better include 100MP Medium Format DSLRs? Are we only talking pixel peaking or actual printed images? I still have two 4x5" Film View Cameras. Large format from the likes of Adams and Weston still looks good today.

I've tinkered with a near MILC Fujifilm X100T and it is just another tool, just different from my Pentax cameras. Best at different things. I am considering a Fuji X-T3 and a couple lenses.

Well, he says if you are a professional, making your living from photography, then you should be using the most current, best technology out there. He also said that if you are an amateur, hobbyist, etc., then what he has to say does not really apply to you.

As I recall, and he actually shows an old clip in his new video, he hated MILC, and said so many times, but he now says mirrorless have improved so much and has so much more to offer, that his thoughts have totally changed. According to the video he sold all of his DSLR's, including his D5.

Link for the video to follow.

Comparing a dSLR to a MILC when both use identical sensors and processors, the images will look the same when the same lens and settings are used to test each.

But that condition is unlikely to occur!

There are many advantages to mirrorless cameras that improve the photographic experience. Paul Sager alluded to some of them above. My take on it is that the experience is DIFFERENT. I can use my camera in ways I never could use a dSLR or SLR or TLR. On the other hand, dSLRs still do a few things better than MILCs or film cameras.

The mirrorless camera I use is both a very good stills camera and a very easy-to-use, full-featured 4K video camera. It makes my job as a content creator (documentation and training materials) very easy. I can record the same content as still photos and video, without having two different camera setups, and with about half of the time, relative expense, and inconvenience that entailed about 15 years ago.

If your current gear does what you want or need it to do, keep it. When you see an obvious need to change, such as some must-have tool or operational advantage your current gear can't provide, then it's time to give mirrorless a close look. (Notice I didn't say, "switch." A switch might be inappropriate for some.)

Always keep the idea in mind that the medium CARRIES the message. While it may "color" it, it is supposed to transport it. So don't let gear get in the way of the images you are making. The photographer makes the photograph. The camera and lens just record the image. There is a HUGE difference. A five-star chef does not need industrial strength pots and pans to cook dinner at home. But (s)he may have them.
