I've checked in on kids and the thievery and they that any and everything they can get. If their "pimp" doesn't want it, it might be given to and older kid who takes care of the really young kids or a baby.

Yes they do use babies in carrages also. That make them look harmless and the other kids can do their dirty deeds while you are distracted.

I’m a bit confused by your remark about most pickpockets being kids in reference to my diaper bag suggestion. Why would a kid be more likely to steal a diaper bag rather than another type of bag? If I’m missing something obvious, please enlighten me and forgive me.

BTW, my husband and I have traveled to Europe several times over the last few years, and have never had any issues. We are both very situationally aware whenever we are out in public. Our bags are always carried in front of us - NOT on our backs. We began doing that when we realized that that’s what the locals did on the street as well as on public transportation. The same held true in Africa and South America. Antarctica was not a concern as the only things the penguins were after were rocks and stones for their nests.

Having looked up thievery I found out that the kids will steal anything, ever a salami sandwich if they can.

Ever if it's not something of large value, it might be something useable by another of their group.

For example, the kid steals something anything, it could even a baloney sandwich, and brings it to their "pimp". If that item(s) is not what you think is worth stealing, someone in the group does or knows someone who does need it. So the "pimp", (being the great person they are. LoL), gives it to to that child who might use on a real baby in a carriage, that might have been used to distract you while the others are ripping you off.

If you can think of a way, they probably do it.

*Also, be sure you have a reliable method to cancel your credit cards and your cell phone service, if it comes to that.

Another thing to be prepaired for, would be to quickly replace your passport or whatever you use to travel with. For Americans know where the American Embassy is.

Hopefully nothing will happen and you can enjoy the friendship and sights offered by the country. If a problem does occur, you will be ready.

We planned a trip to Barcelona, Spain. My wife was extremely fearful that my "baby" would be stolen. She put so much fear in me that I was super vigilant. (I think that is more prudent to be vigilant than buying a camera bag with a diamondback rattlesnake inside.). My regular camera bag is black cloth best up and has various patches on the outside. It doesn't have any logo on it what so ever. She didn't want me to use it. Needless to say she saw a bag and bought it for me unannounced. It is a PACSAFE Z14. This is a sling bag that hold a full frame body and lens plus three other lenses. On the outside it isn't enticing. But it has RFID pockets as well as wire mesh inside the pockets and straps. They also make a backpack model labeled Z16. It's not very hefty on the price tag. About $150 dollars.
I carried the camera bag on board without any problem from TSA. I have a photograph of my old bag and my new bag.

Wherever you are going make sure you know of a nearby camera store. If a lens gets damaged or you need an extra camera memory card you're covered. Also, have a safe flight!
Don't forget to post photos of your trip!

Happy Shooting!

My bag of choice traveling in Paris and villages outside Toulouse was this PacSafe backpack. I carried it on board for the flight, it carried 2 bodies, 3 lenses, tablet, flash, cables, chargers, accessories and Portable hard drives for backup. It fit under the seat and I had a small carryon in the overhead. Once I was there, I used the pack carrying a tripod along with whatever I thought I might need for that day's excursions. Didn't miss any shooting opportunities and was comfortable, but tired at the end of each day.

Use a plain camera strap ..tape over the Nikon on the front of the camera .Use smartwater and when I did weddings I had a GPS tracker in the grip rather than an extra battery.Don't walk on the road side of the pavement or at the rear of a group/ Walk towards the traffic and watch for a bike with two riders. Get a 28-300 .I used a supermarket bag to carry gear. I think you exaggerate the problem ...get insurance...friend went to Italy with the intention of getting his Canon 5D stolen for the insurance ….still got it ….

Hello everyone. We are planning a trip to a city in Europe with many beautiful/interesting sites to photograph. Unfortunately, the city is also known for pickpockets. I'm looking for a camera bag that is compact, will hold an adequate amount of gear*, and is specifically designed to discourage thieves. Can you recommend a product that is reasonably priced (less than $100)?

* DSLR plus 24-120 and 16-35 lenses. Would love to include my 70-200 as well but don't know if it will fit. Definitely need space for essential accessories (filters, spare battery, memory card, etc.).

Both of these items work well for me (many times) in high tourist (crime) areas, the cooler has a carrying strap and will fit under "most" airplane seats.
Also, the cooler keeps your camera insulated against temp extremes (for a short time) and against vibration and shock.
Remember to be safe, situational awareness, and YOU as a UHH Friend can't be replaced while your camera gear can be insured.

Photo17...

I am also an Ex-Cop of 30+ years and have traveled to Europe many times as well as other locations... As mentioned earlier on this site, looks and size does not matter..... personal vigilance and your personal attention to "what's yours" is the key here..... As mentioned before,,, they really want to just 'hit & run' so keep your eyes open, keep your hands on your gear and be every mindful as to where you go and who is around you... 'Safety...' is your responsibility... Those 'Low-Life Idiots' over there have 'nothing but time' on their hands as they 'stalk you' and pick their best moment when your NOT looking.. Trust me...

Although their are 'some standards' as to size and weight for a 'carry-on bag' within the U.S., when you get to other countries, this can vary widely... In Australia, I was limited to 1 bag of 7 Kilos, or 15.4 U.S. pounds and they absolutely made me check my bag and put it at the mercy of the 'luggage monkeys' for three separate flights within the 'outback'... that sucked... and YES, I was P.O.ed.. (no choice)

The first key is to research your airlines and know their limitations as you fly... Do your best to make sure it fits in the 'carry-on' regulations )of course you want a bag with rollers) ... and try your best to be ones of the first to get onto the plane so you will find the 'over-head' space you need to store it... Then, as you land-travel, just be every vigilance as to never let the gear or bag out of your site... Been There - Done That... and I have the T-Shift as I personally have had someone try to 'snatch' my Canon 5D Mk IV and 24-70 mm right out of my hands as I walked the streets of Barcelona Spain a number of years ago... (Thanks God, they did not get it... LOL)

In closing.. ........... Have a wonderful trip
George

When I am a tourist, I use a PacSafe Metrosafe for my camera and other personal items. As mentioned above, I bring a variety of gear with me to the hotel, but only carry the items I will need that day. I tried a Travelon bag, but prefer the PacSafe. I actually use the PacSafe for routine daily activities.

Maybe this is going overboard, but I also use electrical tape to cover the name of the camera, on the theory that it will be less interesting to thieves. I also use generic unbranded lens caps for the same reason, and to keep the originals in good shape for possible resale.

Avoid wire that claim to offer safety. Here is a link a Blog I wrote a the dangers of using a camera or bag that has hidden wires.

Try a good diaper bag. Modify it for your needs with velcro seperators.

Messenger bag, no fancy name on it, well worn would help, strap long enough to wear cross body, wear it with the flap toward you, harder to get at the contents for you but even harder for pickpockets, Bob.

Not sure the bag is all that important from a safety standpoint. Once you pull your camera out of whatever bag to take a photo, the people around you are going to know that you have camera equipment in that bag. As someone pointed out, thieves will stalk you and target you when you least expect it. As has been repeated several times, be aware of your surroundings and use caution. Have a safe and satisfying trip!

I would suggest that whatever you get, do not use a bag with the name or brand of the camera you are carrying emblazoned on the bag where it is easy to see by persons who might really want that same kind of equipment. Hope you enjoy your trip.

Any professional thief, of which populate every large city in Europe are well aware of what bag carries a camera. Regardless of how it is marked.
I have traveled to Europe enough to know I only take my compact Sony HX99 in a belt pouch worn in front of me. NEVER AN ISSUE.
Any bag is a welcome invitation to be stolen. And the thief's in Europe are very, very good at dislodging a bag from, (most of the time) older individuals.

I've used one of these for the last 9 years. I actually have several of them used for various photographic equipment or cameras.

Here's a bit of a different view of it with the equipment I generally carry.
