I would recommend a Lowepro flipside, so while you're wearing it the access to the gear is against your back! You can get them at B&H photo and I got mine on eBay virtually brand new for about 1/2 price and I bought it just for that sort of thing. I even had my 200-400 lens attached to my camera no problem.

I've been living and working in Rome for nearly 8 years now. I carry one body, 3 lenses including a 70-200 2.8 and assorted smaller bits of kit in a bag that cost 30 euro on amazon. Water repellent fabric, looks like a fishing bag, was green but dyed with black in the washing machine so it now looks faded and as if someone tried to fight a war with it and lost. Buckles long gone. Wear the 'shoulder' strap across my chest with the bag lying on my right hip up under my right elbow. Be aware of your surroundings and stay away from central train/bus stations at dark. Stand in queues with the bag between you and your partner. Pick your moment to change lenses when you aren't surrounded etc, etc. BUT remember that you are taking all this gear to get some great pictures so being too cautious will kill the creative.

As an ex cop I can tell you the bag is not the deterrent. You are the deterrent by being aware of your surroundings and the people around you. Have a great trip.

Yes, I agree, you must be aware of your surroundings, Activities & People, if carrying your Camera, use a good Wrist strap. Use a unidentifiable Camera bag, preferably one that is securely attached to your body. When you take it off to retrieve something out of the Bag, look at your surroundings first, is anyone watching you or even following you, be alert to the people around you.

Hello everyone. We are planning a trip to a city in Europe with many beautiful/interesting sites to photograph. Unfortunately, the city is also known for pickpockets. I'm looking for a camera bag that is compact, will hold an adequate amount of gear*, and is specifically designed to discourage thieves. Can you recommend a product that is reasonably priced (less than $100)?

* DSLR plus 24-120 and 16-35 lenses. Would love to include my 70-200 as well but don't know if it will fit. Definitely need space for essential accessories (filters, spare battery, memory card, etc.).

I just got back from Europe and for my tastes, I only took the 16-35 and 24-120. I have learned from travel that the last thing I want to lug around is weight. I also made sure to take a light bag that could fit easily under the seat in stowaway or in the overhead bin on the plane. No monopods or tripods for sure. The lighter the better if you can do without the telephoto. 16-35 was my most used lens by far. Be SURE the bag is watertight or has a cover for it too in case of rain as my Ruggard still got damp inside it.

Use a diaper bag. Thieves are generally not attracted to the contents typically found in a diaper bag.

Mega thanks to everyone who took the time to post thoughts and recommendations. After reading them all, and doing a considerable amount of other research, I settled on the PacSafe CamSafe X17 bag. It has numerous security features while also holding lots of gear (yet isn't too heavy). I also bought a camera strap that is all black and slash-proof.

A few of you were curious about the city we're planning to visit. The answer: Barcelona. Looking forward to seeing and photographing many, many fascinating, beautiful sites. A secondary goal will be avoid any issues with thieves. Thanks again.

Nice choice, I'm sure you will be happy with it.
B town is a great place to visit.
There are a lot of gypsies. Wallet in front pocket at all times.
If someone (usually a pretty woman) comes up and wants to tell you some sort of fortune telling via a string around your wrist ... don't.
It's the typical distraction ploy .... there is always ... someone else with them.

Good choice on the bag. I love Pacsafe products, I have one for my micro 4/3 setup. Have fun. My advice to everyone heading to big city Europe is when someone tries to stop you, step around them while saying no thank you. There are beggars, survey takers, needy kids, injured kids, lame old ladies (who walk just fine after sunset), fortune tellers, couples that stop in front of you fighting, families camped out on narrow sidewalks, the gal right in front of you who spills her purse, and many, many more that I haven’t seen, yet.

We've been back from Barcelona for a while now and wanted to let you know everything went fine. Thankfully, there were no issues with pickpockets. Maybe we were just lucky or maybe it was because we were vigilant. Or maybe it was a combination of the two. Anyway, the bag worked out well and I look forward to using it on future trips. It is quite versatile and can hold a whole lot of equipment if desired.

Some of you asked to see a sampling of images from our trip so here you go. Your comments are welcome! Let me know if you have any questions. And thanks again to everyone who offered tips and other info.

I've been using army surplus satchels since 1963. Its strong, protective, durable, weather resistant, has lots of D-rings and strong straps and it's ugly and not particularly attractive to bad guys. Get the real Government Issue surplus, not the ersatz so-called tactical gear. The real stuff is virtually indestructible. There is every manner of duffel bags and some of my favorites are the telephone and radio communications cases.

As you can see from the shot of my studio storage area, I have too many traditional fancy cases. For travel and questionable location, I prefer the old military bags. It's cheap too
