No, we did all our work off blueprints. I need to go to the National Zoo to see what it looks like in person.

You should go if you get the chance. You could spend a full day easily, maybe even two. A lot of the exhibits have been redone in recent years.

Great group of zoo images Carol. Will be looking forward to seeing more.

Thank you, Tom! We had been to the zoo a few years ago and we didn’t see nearly all of it this time but it was really nice.

Carol, never been to this zoo and your photos show how special it is.

Greg, I haven’t been to many zoos but this one is impressive. They seem to have a very deep commitment to the preservation of the species that are represented. The zoo also has a very large separate facility that is not open to the public where they have herds of animals for breeding purposes.

I love that you panned the clouded leopard to emphasize motion and speed! Pretty funny about the alligator

Enjoyed these very much, Carol. I volunteered at the National Zoo for several years in the late 1980's. I worked at the Invertebrate Exhibit, which I believe is no longer there. A shame since it was quite unique to the "usual" zoo experience. Great to hear your experience was so positive, including with the staff.

I was amazed that I managed to keep the little leopard’s face sharp. He was really moving. There were two of them and they were tumbling around in the branches non-stop.

I remember that you worked at the zoo in the past. That must have been a wonderful experience. It seems like it would be a very special opportunity.

Excellent set, Carol. 'Zoo photos' don't usually look as natural as this.

Thank you, Earl. I tried to keep the backgrounds in mind when I shot. It wasn’t easy because of the barriers and also there was a lot of foliage that got in the way.

The National Zoo in Washington DC is a delight to visit. The animals are healthy and well cared for with spacious habitats. The zoo is clean and I noticed no odors at all. The staff is friendly and seem to enjoy telling you more about the animals they care for. I will probably do another zoo post as well, but these are some of the first encounters.

The Panda house was great but not so good for photography. Inside, the Pandas played in their water and lounged around enjoying a meal of bamboo. Outside, without glass, was a better photo opp. We talked to one of the keepers of the Maned Wolves and that was very interesting. Apparently, the wolves frequently prey on local raccoons that venture into their habitat.

I hope you enjoy these encounters.

Thank you, Mike. It is mind boggling when you consider the cost of everything that is free to the public in DC. I know our taxes must play a big part but I believe there are also substantial donations from wealthy patrons. However it happens, it is something everyone should take advantage of if they are able. There is no place quite like it.
