I agree with Jerry about the D7500. Comfortable ergonomics, tilt and touch screen, great IQ, only a single card slot but so what, I still prefer it over the D7200 I had.

I couldn't agree more about the D7500. And currently on sale for $599.

I have one and love it and also don't about the single card slot.

Looking to upgrade from a D50 and Nikon rep recommding D5600. I do like the weight difference though I am interested in a “next level” camera. Any experience, thoughts, recommendations?

Thanks!

Years ago I went from a D60 to a D7000, then upgraded to the D7200. There are some great bargains right now on factory refurbished D7xxx models. I believe the D7xxx and D8xx series are more versatile in the number of older model Nikon lenses they can use. My D7200 was one of my favorite bodies that I owned, always performed well for my needs (vacations, family, grandchildren, beach photos). I would suggest visiting a local camera store to handle a number of models to see what feels good to you and what features are most important to you.

It's a decent midlevel consumer-grade camera. 24 Mp, dual card slots, base ISO 100, and the swing-out screen.

PLEASE quit giving out your lists of misinformation!
This time, the D5600 has only a single card slot!

I went from the 3200 to a 5300 and now use a D800. Nikon makes you pay extra for every feature. Overall image quality went way up with the 800, but I think the 5600 should be competitive with any other APS-C camera. Easy menus. I originally upgraded for in camera HDR- very effective and easy, even handheld. Size and weight are real easy to deal with on all day trips.

Suggestion: Look into FX lenses for your DX camera. More expensive, heavier, but better image quality.
When you decide to go full frame, you'll be ready.

Have both a d5200 & d5500 among my Nikons. They get more use than my other cameras. Good all-around cameras.

Wait wait wait! If the OP has the D50 so he can use his lenses from the film days, that is non CPU lenses, then the D5600 will be a disappointment, the auto focus feature of the D50 will be sorely missed. One workaround is to use the rangefinder function in the camera, which means fussing with manual focusing. Not that the rangefinder function is required. I have 2 friends who went with the D7000 series because they don't trust their eyesight for manual focus. Hence the rangefinder suggestion.

I think I'm missing something here. The lenses the OP has for his D50 should work with th D5600, including autofocus!? 😕

I have a D5600 and I use the 18-140 lens and a 50 mm prime, if I need a faster lens or want to get up close. I've used this camera since December and use it mostly. I still have my D3400 and use it too, just not as much. The both cameras are great and do most everything well. If I had it to do over I would have gotten the D7500 for nearly the same price as the D5600. Mainly because the exposure info is on the top of the camera and not on the live screen. I thought the articulated screen would be great. Not so much. I can't see anything on it in bright sunlight. It also opens to the side where you plug in the remote shutter release. You can't turn it in many positions, without hitting the cable or wireless receiver. I just keep it folded screen side out in the camera. I'm sure the screen on a D7500 would have the same issues and probably even the higher end Nikons.

The D5600 will do most of everything the others will do. If you need a higher burst rate, of course you will need higher end camera. It only has one card slot and I haven't found I needed more than one. I carry a bunch with me just in case, but I've never had to change cards and in both the D3400 and D5600 I have the original cards I bought with the cameras. I really like the D5600 and it exceeds my expectations. For the price it is hard to beat. I would also ignore the idea that DSLR is on it's way out. Ask yourself, you are currently using a D50 and it still is working. Just how old is that camera? Don't let strangers have a GAS attack for you. Get the camera that suits your needs and not what somebody that isn't paying tells you.

Going from a d50 to a 5600 is like going from a pinto to a Maserati, it will vastly improve your photography. I went to a d500 from a d700, it changed me as a photographer...

A good friend bought the D50 years ago because it could automatically focus his lenses from his film days. If the OP did the same, he will be unpleasantly surprised when the D5600 won't do that. The D50 has a motor in the body to do the autofocus function, like the D7000 series.

I purchased a D5600 last year and really like it. I went for a kit with the 18-140 VR and the 70-300 VR. Honestly, the 18-140 rairly come off the camera. I love it. Not the fastest lens but the 5600 is very forgiving with higher ISO. One of the things that helped my decision was the size/weight of it and the way it fit my hand (a bit arthritic). You've been given lots of good advice but in the end it's your choice to make. If you can, go to a store and handle a few of them before you decide. Good luck with your search.

I have the D5500 and like the ratating touch screen. I just purchased the Nikon 200-500 5.6 and the work great together.
I do landscapes and wildlife, and of course grandkids.
I'm not a professional, but have dabbled in photography since 1970's.

My wife has one and loves it. She seems to take much better photos than I do with my D750. Maybe it is the operator.

IT'S ALWAYS the operator

I use a D5600 and a D5500 to take photographs at events for my partner's refrigerator magnet business. I am shooting under less than ideal conditions - often indoors, at night, using bounce flash. People think the pictures look great. I really like these cameras, and find them easy to use and lightweight. I mainly use the Nikon 16-80mm f2.8 lens which works well in low light.
