Looking to upgrade from a D50 and Nikon rep recommding D5600. I do like the weight difference though I am interested in a “next level” camera. Any experience, thoughts, recommendations?

Thanks!

It is a nice light in weight camera. Lots out there at very good prices, if you want to go used or new. My wife has one and loves it. She seems to take much better photos than I do with my D750. Maybe it is the operator. If you are in doubt, rent one to see how it handles for you.

I also have a D50. I bought the D5300 a few years ago. The D5600 has a touch screen; not sure about other changes. Anyway, I love the D5300 - can use the lenses from the D50, nice size & weight, very capable cameras....

I also have a D5xxx series camera. I like the light weight, built-in flash, and fully articulated screen. The D5600 is even more versatile with the touch screen, NFC, WiFi, and Bluetooth. I believe it to be the most versatile DX camera in its class. With the AF-P VR lenses, you can have a light-weight, very capable outfit.

It's a decent midlevel consumer-grade camera. 24 Mp, dual card slots, base ISO 100, and the swing-out screen.

So then, I guess, the question is: Is the OP content with moving up, from whatever he is with his D50, to being a decent midlevel consumer-grade photographer with a D5600, or should he aspire to even higher levels of proficiency and gear? 😕

Dual card slots?

I just sold my D5600 but enjoyed using it, especially when traveling - wasn't too large or heavy. Came with 28-140 mm kit lens which covered 90+% of travel photos although not a very fast lens. It also allows shooting in RAW or RAW + Jpeg but NO dual slot as mentioned by another.

A good friend shoots the D5600 with the kit 75-300 and his results rival our D850's with the new 500 5.6.

I wouldn’t go with 3xxx or 5xxx. I would jump at least 7200 or 7500, 750 or even 500 or 8xx. I was using low end dslr for over8 years and there was always some kind of limitations. When I jumped from 7000 to 810 it’s really a different. Know I have time to learn more about light before I was getting nuts about focus and some other adjustments. I have more fun to use my 810......

Could you please be a little more specific? What kind of "limitations" are you referring to?

The D5600 and the D500 are most likely on their way out. If you want a DX, get the D7500 or wait for the D7600. For an FX body, I like the D750.

I bought a D5500 the same time my friend bought a D7200. Although I will admit the D7200 is the more capable camera, both cameras' capabilties exceed our needs and my friend likes the D5500's light weight and touch screen. Two important questions: are you a professional and what kind of photography do you do?

A lot of Hoggers will advise you to buy nothing less than a D850 or some other top-of-the line model but I say pick the model with the features you will actually use and that you've physically handled and like. Then save the money you might have spent on a body, for some good lenses. Yes, a $3,000 body will satisfy your GAS but do you really need a Porsche if all you're doing, is driving to the store for some groceries?

I agree with Jerry about the D7500. Comfortable ergonomics, tilt and touch screen, great IQ, only a single card slot but so what, I still prefer it over the D7200 I had.
