I bought ON1 Photo Raw 2018 and initially found it a little frustrating (I’ll take the flack for that.) I upgraded to the latest version 2019 when offered in Nov 2018, reluctantly. Now, 6 months later I’m totally committed to the workflow and versatile editing approaches. I especially appreciate that there’s no need to import, i.e. LR. And with this month’s planned interim update, which finally includes a usable history, I’m committed.

I deleted my Lightroom Catalogue, and removed PS and Lightroom from my machine, but before I did that I had Lightroom write to xmp files. but that being said, I really didn't care about preserving the Lightroom edits because I always edited in PS and saved as tif's. So edited photos were preserved that way.

So, yes I've totally moved to the On1 file system, which is similar but not identical to Lightroom. I've got 40 or 50,000 images, and in Lightroom I found it difficult to correct errors in the file system so I had too many subfolders. I was able to easily fix all of them on On1, and On1 simply read the file structure and all my images are easily found. On1 also has a catalogue feature which I have not explored yet.

The strength of On1 Raw over Lightrom is in the develop module. At this point I'm not sure if another Photo editor is even needed. On1 does layers and masking. Layers and masking is what I used PS for.

On1 is very robust.

I'm not sure what is going on at Adobe, but it appears they have legal issues. I don't need their headaches, and I have always hated Adobe's hogging of system resources. I also didn't like the subscription model, and over the long haul Adobe would cost me thousands. So I looked at alternatives, and On1 Raw will work for me. I also believe that Adobe will raise the monthly rate, $9.99 was my max. I found it intriguing, that upon cancelling my subscription Adobe came right back and offered a new subscription for $20 a month.

Like I said, I don't know what's going on at Adobe, and I don't want their issues spilling over into my photography.

Oh, I agree. In the past I've found On1 cumbersome, but with this new piece of software I was impressed enough to jump ship.

I started with one of Photoshop's earliest versions of Elements, then on to Lightroom 2003, then into the subscription model. So On1 is a big jump for me. Another factor is there are plenty of online tutorials to help me along the way, when I have questions.

All my images are catalogued in Lightroom--I am comfortable with that, and don't want to disturb it. I do use Lightroom processing and presets; but for more involved processing, I am used to, and prefer ON1over Photoshop.
Lightroom with a ON1 plug-in, is what I am used to, comfortable with, and meets my perceived needs.
I freely admit I am no authority, and have much to learn.

I have ON1 Raw 2019 also, but I have't used it a lot to this point. I do, however, like it a lot with my usage to this point. Thanks for posting that ON1 by Anthony Morganti. I have watched his videos quite a bit. He does a great job of explaining different programs, how he uses them, and comparing them. Very easy to follow and understand what he is explaining.

Adobe now offers two plans: Lightroom and Photography. Each is still $9.99 monthly. If you go with On1 and pay for an update, you have spent more than with LR. Most people who "buy" software often want to use it forever without updating. Yes, that is cheaper than subscribing but between improvements in hardware and software plus the phasing out of support of legacy products, sooner or later, you will have to upgrade. For me, the subscription model works better. For those worried about the future of Adobe, On1 can provide no more long-term protection from litigation, price increases, obsolescence or being gobbled up by a bigger company.

You never really buy or own software. You are only licensing it.

Compared to Lr I would say that On1's strength is in what it does for you. For example, On1's Perfect Eraser is sooo much easier to use than Lr's clone tool. And the effects/filters are time-savers in the situations where they give you what you're looking for.
