Kinda lucky you're still alive ... in many danger
situations you're outnumbered.

I like to capture people on the street doing their daily routine, i.e. people working / playing. I ALWAYS try to ask for permission first. Just by holding up my camera, I usually get an OK.

I really don’t like being direct, but it seems lately some of our inquiries have become fodder for some ”members” to be condescending with comments and jabs aimed at us amateurs wanting constructive advise to improve our techniques and experiences.
In my opinion, if you can’t give constructive advice and comments, get off our forum!

Don't dismiss the possibility that Russians are posting nasty comments on this forum. These guys are serious, and Americans don't seem to care much about the snowballing descent in name calling.

Doesn't asking permission first give you a totally different shot than if you shot first?

When I did street shooting I would start with a candid or three, than approach the people. The differences in the before and after images were always interesting.

Just wondering where fellow hogs find their favorite places to do street photography.
I don’t need a dissertation or crass comments, just good world places to do street work.

Start with any interesting downtown street with lots of pedestrian traffic and a little longer lens so you are not right in subject's faces, and grow your confidence.

Cheers!

My best portraits have been approaching
intriguing women and telling them I was
taking an art class and needed a photo of
two colors that were part of their dress.
NOT their face, just their dress. The ladies
would usually relax, twirl, gladly oblige.

also, if you have a cute dog, you are golden.

I checked out your suggestion. Both
Adorama and B&H had no cute dogs.
Maybe ebay, direct from Hong Kong.
But after three weeks in a shipping
container I hafta wonder if any dog
could ever emerge still really cute :-(

Long lines remove you and the viewer from the emotional impact and feeling of the moment. Learn to get in close with wider lenses. It will draw your viewer in too.

I would like to do street photography as a I live in New York City. But I'm a little afraid of the negative experiences by other unsuspecting people walking around. I'm afraid people will become hostile. So I haven't ventured there.

As a NYC street photographer I never had that problem, but you also have to be reasonable if you're taking portraits or close shots of single or small groups of people/kids ask first....a tele lens/zoom helps too. If they're street performers I don't bother to ask it's implicit.

First and third are good but I especially like the second. It gets you thinking and wondering what the story is.
