I would like to do street photography as a I live in New York City. But I'm a little afraid of the negative experiences by other unsuspecting people walking around. I'm afraid people will become hostile. So I haven't ventured there.

Simply pretend you are just another harmless, snap-happy tourist visiting the Big Apple for the first time. Dress the part, and keep the big lenses and tripod at home. If you notice someone glancing at you with suspicion, do as if you are taking pictures of buildings and landmarks, oblivious to the people around you.

I really don’t like being direct, but it seems lately some of our inquiries have become fodder for some ”members” to be condescending with comments and jabs aimed at us amateurs wanting constructive advise to improve our techniques and experiences.
In my opinion, if you can’t give constructive advice and comments, get off our forum!

It is my opinion that your second post was totally uncalled for, as I saw no one "jabbing" or making snarky or snide remarks at you. Maybe you should take a step back and reconsider your second comments.

No more being in a public place in the USA?
That will do wonders for tourist photos, especially where people are ALL OVER the place, like Disney.

One thing to get out of the pool on your own, another to be told to GET OUT.

If you're walking around with a DSLR or mirrorless and pointing it a random people in public, you're going to attract attention. In a crowded, touristy area, you're not going to raise much suspicion. But walk around a cozy neighborhood snapping pics, and you're probably going to make some people uncomfortable.

I was in Portland visiting family, and in the middle of a weekday thought it would be interesting to walk around his neighborhood taking pictures or some of the old houses, coffeeshops, etc. Started inside a cool old coffee house, and was immediately aware that my activities were making some of the other patrons uncomfortable, so I shuttered my lens, drank my coffee, and headed out to the street.

As I embarked on the sidewalk, I took a few test shots to calibrate my exposure settings, and as I was looking down at my camera, I was approached by a man who aggressively threw his paper coffee cup at my head: missing by inches, but certainly catching my attention.

"What the f-ck are you taking pictures of boy!"

I was shocked, and as I looked up and gathered a comprehension of what was happening, I realized that a homeless/crazy man was coming at me. I hadn't even taken a picture of him, but he clearly didn't like that I was taking pictures. He came at me and tried to grab my camera.

Fortunately, I am no slouch, and was able to dodge him, but he kept coming at me. I told him I didn't take any pictures of him, but he was screaming that he wanted to see my camera. Fat chance.
What ensued was a 15 minute chase through the streets of the Portland suburbs with him eventually giving up on the pursuit. But my heart was racing and my lungs burning: a less athletic victim would have faced a potentially violent confrontation.

While I'm sure this kind of reaction is probably reserved for the mentally unstable, it's likely that more reserved individuals would still harbor a bit of resentment towards an outsider entering their neighborhood for the novelty of capturing people in their home environments.

So my advice to your question would be this: street photography is probably most suited for areas that could be described as downtown, crowded, touristy, or some kind of event.
If you're walking around with a DSLR or mirrorless... (show quote)

Good reason to get a CCW and carry a sidearm. When I shot large format images around Chicago and Philly, my pistol was always within reach.

Two general comments. One is that perhaps when we are commenting, we should do so as if we are face to face with the person we are talking to or about. The other comment concerns being told not to take photographs at malls or other similar locations. I could be there with my camera merely looking through the viewfinder and be told to stop taking pictures. Meanwhile, all around me, there could be any number of people with their cell phones seemingly engaged in conversations, but actually taking photographs of the very thing I was told to leave alone.

Could you clarify something. Do you stand in the street and photograph people on the sidewalk, or stand on the sidewalk and shoot people in the street?

I've done both. Mostly sidewalk to sidewalk, though. One was from inside a pub through the glass to the outside.

I recall a friend telling me of his concern taking pictures of children; his fear of being considered a pervert....
What I tried last weekend was taking a piece of white cardboard with a black dot in the center.
I hung it near where I was perched and took pictures of it, and by coincidence people near by.
If they asked I told them I was in camera class.
My best portraits have been approaching intriguing women and telling them I was taking an art class and needed a photo of two colors that were part of their dress. NOT their face, just their dress. The ladies would usually relax, twirl, gladly oblige. also, if you have a cute dog, you are golden.

Montreal is remarkably diverse, and I've been there 14 times on my way to an Atlantic Salmon river on the North Shore. Always find more pictures to take in Montreal.

I like to capture people on the street doing their daily routine, i.e. people working / playing. I ALWAYS try to ask for permission first. Just by holding up my camera, I usually get an OK.
