There are numerous compositional elements that contribute to a successful image. One of them, The Rule of Thirds, can enhance the impact of a scene by increasing harmony or adding tension. The Rule of Thirds was discovered by the Greeks and has been used for thousands of years by artists.
Imagine your photo is divided into 9 equal segments by 2 vertical and 2 horizontal lines. The Rule of Thirds says you should place your subject along one of those lines or at the points where they intersect. Try using this concept as you go out and shoot today and see what happens when followed, or not! Remember most rules are meant to be broken except this one, PEANUT SAID TO HAVE FUN!

Page 1: markar, went back for another looksee. That photo of the sweet little girl getting her share of Easter eggs, that one was heart-warming, love it. Very well composed, too. God bless all you lovely and happy people over there...you deserve it.

Thank you, subroto. Hey, you deserve it too.
The girl is my niece, Emily. She is indeed sweet and just on the edge of ..do I believe in the Easter Bunny?

I think all of us on UHH are so happy to have found a friendly 'photo guy' in India.

Ahhh, childhood -- so fleeting an experience ! As regards the sentiments about the photo guy, I assure you the feeling is mutual, and I'm sure I'm by far the richer for the cross cultural exchange. I thank Providence for having given me a warm, happy, multi-talented family...it's so good to be here.

p17 Totally agree, Pea. Stop, look compose, shoot and if that is a habit then, when you get in situations that call for "quick! shoot!" (like kids and animals) you'll have greater success - it becomes "automatic" to a degree.

Yes i was with the girls a few days ago and they move right along so had be on "automatic" and got a good one because no time to sit there haha

After looking at all these awesome pictures, I thought to myself about when I compose my pictures. I feel as if some of us just have these artistic skills automatically. Like me for instance, I was taking pictures using the rule of thirds and didn't even know about it until today. To me it doesn't matter if the subject is center framed or not as long as the picture accomplishes what it is meant to. My experience had been; I see something I like, maybe a tree with a reflection on the water. I want to focus on a tall tree but at the same time I want the reflection to be clear as well. So I play with my camera until I get the composition just the way I want it. Then I try to remember the settings for another day. Regardless of all this everyone that has posted today has amazing talent. Photography is not as simple as picking up the camera and pushing that button. It is far more technical to get the "good" shots we desire. If I take a picture with my mind on taking an award winning picture, then every shot to ME is a winner. Thank you everyone it has been a great day, I learned something new and plan to use it in my photography journey. I can't get enough of this forum.
