The Rule of Thirds says you should place your subject along one of those lines or at the points where they intersect. Try using this concept as you go out and shoot today and see what happens when followed, or not! Remember most rules are meant to be broken except this one, PEANUT SAID TO HAVE FUN!

Love that black & white. Here's my best 'thirds' from Dog Splash on Sunday. I looked in Photoshop real quick and didn't see a thirds option under the Grids. Anyone find a thirds in Photoshop?

When you crop a grid should come up to indicate and many cameras have the option to have one displayed.
quote=Smokenmirrorss quote=RiverNan There are nu... (show quote)

Yea, its on my camera. I typically crop in Bridge when I adjust, that way I am cropping from RAW and not really cropping the original. It doesn't show a grid (or at least I haven't figured out how to make Bridge display it).
quote=Peanut quote=Smokenmirrorss quote=RiverNa... (show quote)

So unless you want an eye for example dead on an intersection you should be OK right? Or maybe somebody with more experience in Bridge can jump in here!!!
quote=Smokenmirrorss quote=Peanut quote=Smokenm... (show quote)

Yup! I'm good.
quote=Peanut quote=Smokenmirrorss quote=Peanut ... (show quote)

i knew that ;-)
quote=Smokenmirrorss quote=Peanut quote=Smokenm... (show quote)

OK, so now I know I don't pay attention, but... When you crop in Bridge, it automatically brings up a thirds screen. I went back through my crops and realized I have been subconsciously avoiding the 1/3 crop lines. I have been filling the boxes. Now I am going to play with putting the focal center on one of the grid crossbars and see what happens. This is so exciting!!!

Janice, you too

Sher,, fog is beautiful. I won a month on a calendar last year and the photo was a small ''mountain'' with fog on the top and I named it Fog and Mystery because fog does create mystery, it creats peace and also in a normal day, no fog that is, your subject might be cluttered with other objects hence you lose the importance of the subject matter while in fog, your composition is 100% clear of clutter.

P1
Pea - would love to see what you start with to end with what you've posted - sometime.
Rnan - poor bee - not much for him on that shriveled cone flower
RR - looks like you're about to put your car on that sailboatÂ…
MGS - LOVE that saying! Never saw it before. LOL
Markar - looks like "the rule" to me.
P2
Seaside - fantastic osprey shot!
jfrank - gorgeous cat portrait
Subro - Stunning portraits. I am in awe of how you capture emotion in faces, the "feel" of your city. SO glad you went on a walk a bout.
Janice - great explanation and love the dog
P3
jfantastic - it's hard to keep up. Sometimes I hit dry spells, then something (usually something on UHH) gets me going again. If we didn't get pushed and have a "challenge" (speaking for myself), I'd get lazy and be satisfied with status quo
Rnan - please find that bee a better meal - even if it is in the rt quad!

Now in #1 here, the tractor would be in the left vertical quadrant while the two guys would be inthe central horizontal quadrant ... or so I'd like to believe.

RR..what is your subject in tractor shot? And why did you put it where you did?

Well I wanted the tractor to be there, but I also wanted the two guys raking hay and I am also a fan of thirds. By using thirds we can create some out of the ordinary P&S center focused shots.

The Rule is a guideline only as you know.....in that shot the guy with the hat seems most interesting...have you tried putting him anywhere else?
quote=Roadrunner quote=Peanut quote=Roadrunner ... (show quote)

And with this rule you do not center.... you put subject in top third, bottom third, left third, or right third, or at an intersection of top right, top left, bottom right and bottom left - this rule is totally non centering
quote=Peanut quote=Roadrunner quote=Peanut quo... (show quote)

Yes it is a concept...i strongly believe there are no rules in photography .... and after experimenting i see the value of not centering. Thanks Janice :-)
My teacher says to leave the center of the photo for Christ's second coming!!!! LOL
quote=Janice quote=Peanut quote=Roadrunner quo... (show quote)

There are some subjects where centering works best and I think most people center because that is where cameras focus, on mine I can change where it focuses but some can't. Photography is fun and if you play with it enough sometimes you stumble upon lighting and comp answers accidentally, just by looking at what others and yourself have done and find what is appealing to you as the photog. Different things appeal to different people, what I like in a photo may be the exact thing you hate.

Song - nice to see a photo of you and your other shots are really great

Rufe - Thank you so kindly, that is the best compliment I have ever gotten and it means a lot that it came from you.
Your orchid shot is amazing, the empty space does help make it fantastic, but so much more too - I like the bloom but the bud next to it adds to the photo as well as the bloom farther back and the dark BG compliments the color of the orchid making it a greeat photo all around. I see why it is one of your fav's

Pg 20
Rufe - congratulations on employee of the month but also on being liked by the boss enough that he keeps milk there for you _ LOL too funny

PG 21 -

RR - you made me laugh with the toy comment, but yes it should be fun it is a hobby after all

Lass - very nice shots

pg 22

RR - love the fall colors and yes thirds on the second set, except the last is more like leading lines I think

Pg 23

Jer - great example of the rule of thirds and beautiful too

pg 24

PJ - stunning and since you asked, I might crop a bit off the left side but it looks good as is too

Sher - nice shots - leading lines in a couple of them! :thumbup:
