My 52mm rear filter for my Nikon 500mm f/4 lens is scratched and I want to replace it. It has a NC filter { neutral color } but just wondering for those in the know if a UV or skylight would be better or other?

Sax, get the nc, otherwise you will be taking it in and out depending on conditions. On the plus side, you'd have it if you needed it.
I assume the scratched filter is affecting your shots?

The Nikon NC is a part of the lenses optical system and should be replaced with the same. You can also use a UV , MD or CPL as needed, but something really should be mounted in that holder.

No I dont think it is affecting my shots but I just dont like having scratched filters. wouldnt a UV be better to use than the NC though? I would imagine the NC is just giving more neutral colors where as UV would be the most versatile?

There is a (drop-in)clear-glass UV filter in my 300mm f/2.8 Nikkor, which is part of the optical set-up. It remains in place (recommended) whatever I am shooting. How did your filter get scratched?
