The Manfrotto 055 series is excellent for the price. You can also find some very good deals on tripods as well as heads on Ebay.

The 055XPROB makes the famous Manfrotto-patented horizontal center column feature even easier to use. By extending the column to itshighest vertical position, it can be swung around to horizontal without removing the head or disassembling the column itself, so switching between framing and positioning setups is more convenient than ever. The ergonomics of the leg angle release mechanism andthe quick action leg locks themselves have also been greatly improved

local shop has this one for 179.99

tlbuljac, certainly in the UK the 055XPROB (the model number) does not come with a head. It does however extend to a good height, 179 cm, (about 71.5 inches), which may or may not be a deciding factor. I don't need that height but it is a serious consideration for me when looking for a new tripod.

Dragon, welcome to the hog.
If you are willing to buy used, also check on KEH. I purchased a very nice older, lightweight alloy Gitzo there that I use for travel for a very good price. I recall they had lots of heavier pods and legs of all brands. You would have to research them individually if they have no description. You might be able to find a great tripod/legs at a good price. And KEH is quit well known and trusted among photographers. Catch them when they have a free shipping offer, as their shipping seems to me to be expensive. Good luck.

Hello,
You should look at this Unit I purchased from Amazon on line. The Ravelli APGL4 New Professional 70" Tripod with Adjustable Pistol Grip Head and Heavy Duty Carry Bag . It is about $100 USD. I like it so far as I only received it a month ago. Seems very sound. When I read the online reviews about it, they are most all glowing with one exception. For some reason the screws on the units leg clips do not always seem to be tightened well when you receive it. I know sound bad . but most of the reviews other than that were great. When mine arrived first thing I did was to check them and most were loose. They suggested that you just tighten the screws I took it one step further. I just took some nail polish and reset each screw with a dab of the polish to keep them locked into place. other than that it seems to be very solid and stable.

Hello to all.
I brought the The Ravelli APGL4 New Professional 70" Tripod with Adjustable Pistol Grip Head about a year and a half ago and was amazed at the sturdiness of it for the price which was around $100. This is Rock Solid even in 30 mph gust at the beach in the morning shooting sunrises.

Only drawback is it is a little heavy if I'm making a long track through the woods. But that happens when your 70 and 30lbs overweight.

Ugh... the tripod debate. We live in a dilettante tripod world these days. I mistakenly bought a $500-ish Manfrotto which cannot be called a tripod, except maybe for the tiniest of point and shoot plastic cameras. Full of coffee nerves. When I have to travel with a tripod, I pay extra at the ticket counter for the big bag with my Gitzo Tele Studex Giant, which, though heavy, is a real tripod. Tripod making is mostly a lost art in the modern world.

I don't know how much that lens you have weighs, but you need to account for the weight you are placing on the tripod. Buy one that will easily handle double the weight of your camera and heaviest lens. I don't know if you'll find a new tripod for your situation for under $200 but you can probably find a good used one that will.
