Have you considered getting an old feet lens. One can get a very pricey canon 24mm 1.4 or 35mm 1.8 or a 50mm 1.2 or 1.4 or 1.8 lens. How it works is you get closer to the object by putting one foot in front of the other until you have the composition you want. You then push the button and take the shot.

I wondered if anyone could suggest a good zoom lens for my Canon 20D (yes, I know it's ancient, but still takes great photos). I'm doing some photography inside in the evening at a friends engagement party next week and I want to hire a zoom lens so that I can get some decent photos without "being in the way". Anyone have any suggestions for a zoom lens that will give me good photos in low light situations?

Not knowing how far away you will be makes it hard to make a recomendation. Any good lens that is an f2.8 or better will work though,

I just took another look at the original post, and the person does not give any hint on where, or in what type of building the party will be given. If in a private home, or in a gym. So, the angle of vision of the zoom has to be considered. Also, the amount of ambient light in the area has not been addressed. You can get a f1.8 lens with not enough zoom for a large room, but lit with tungsten lights, in an overhead mount, or with halogen in floor lights. In any event you will be combating all sorts of shadows uneven lighting. To help the person with a real decision, there has to be more information. Also, the person is renting a lens, so his choices go beyond a manufacturer lens. Take a look at the new Sigma pro line of lenses, and don't forget Tamron.

Yes, I'm wanting to hire a lens, but only for a couple of days so I don't want to be hiring a lot - just one :)

So...what are the specifics?

How large is the room or rooms that you are shooting in?

What kind of light is there?

What lenses do you currently own?

The answers to these questions will help you decide what you need (if anything)

You may want to look at the Tamron line up. They have a 24-70mm f2.8 Di VC USD lens. This will adapt to almost any light situation, but would work best with a off camera strobe. It is made for a full frame camera, so multiply the zoom by 1.4 for the adjusted view size, but the light sensitivity will remain the same. Don't think your on camera pop up lens is Ok, for any size room it is not adequate for group shots in a dark room. Oh, are you in Britain, because in the U.S. we don't hire a lens, we rent them.
