Hi All
I have been recieving your news letter for a while and find this site a great source of information so I have finally signed up to the forum.
I recently purchased a large amount of Nikon equipment from a friend who has decided to give up his hobby.
Here is the list
Nikon D7000 ( 700 shots )
Nikon D90 ( 4500 shots )
MB-D11 battery grip
Nikon AF-S 50mm F1.8 G
Nikon AF-S 105mm F2.8 G ED VR
Tamron DI SP 10-24mm F3.5
Sigma AP0 DG 70-300mm F4-5.6
Nikon AF-S 55-200mm F4.5 VR
Nikon AF-S 18-55mm F3.5 - 5.6
Nikon AF-S 18-105nn F3.5 -5.6
Tamron XR Di 11 SP 17-50mm F2.8 (if) Aspherical
Nikon AF-S 24-120mm F3.5-5.6 VR IF ED
Hoya AI 28-85mm F4
Speedlight SB 700
Manfrotto Carbon tripod
plus loads of filters / sd cards
I purchased all this for £1200 ( about $1900) and I guess I got a good deal.
My question is do I need all these lenses ? I seem to have a few that overlap
I am newish to photography but have always had an interest but intend to make this a big hobby.
Are there any lens recommendations ? I plan mainly to be doing landscape and architecture.
Many thanks in advance
If it was myself, i would test each lens on the same object and see which one's gave the results i was looking for as you have 2 camera bodies you can carry both the lens of your choosing for the outing ( i used to carry 2 camera back when i used 35 mm film 1 with black and white film 1 with color .
Lens that did not fit my needs , i would sell or trade for something else that did .

Good deal is an understatement....wow. For landscape and architecture you mite want to hang on to the wide angle lens...and both primes.

I take you mean these ones ?
Nikon AF-S 50mm F1.8 G
Nikon AF-S 105mm F2.8 G ED VR
Tamron DI SP 10-24mm F3.5
Yes I thought it was a good deal after looking up some prices.
All I got to do now is get out and put it to use

Thanks Brian
after adding it all up yes it looks like a bargain

Great deal. You do have a lot of overlap and several of the lenses are kit lenses. Others are really great lens to have. Suggest you Google Ken Rockwell and read his reviews on each. This would be a great place to a least begin to form your own opinion. Regarding the cameras (you didn't ask) if you are considering keeping only one keep the D7000. You possibly could (should?) sell enough of the lenses to recoup much of your initial investment. Good places to get a quote are B&H, Adorama and KEH.
BTW, welcome to the Hog.

You are very welcome , n yes i'd say you got quite a deal there .
Yes, you certainly got a good deal there. I'm assuming that everything is in good condition.
There's a lot of overlap and redundancy here and I endorse other replies which suggest you go out and test each lens under different conditions, decide what you want to keep and sell the rest. I suggest you keep the primes and only look at the overlaps in the zooms. The 18-55 and the 55-200 are both kit lenses and although they're both very good for the price, they're unlikely to measure up to any critical comparison.
From the price quoted I'm guessing you're in UK, in which case shipping the surplus to the States for sale is not an option. Now that Jessops have gone under it will, hopefully, give some strength to the independents. Try London Camera Exchange who, despite the name, have branches in many parts of UK. You could always try eBay.
Enjoy your new hobby. Don't be in any rush to sell off surplus gear. Spend some time finding your way round before you make a decision on what to ditch.
MAN, you really need a really big camera bag!

All I'll say is that your friend really took it in the butt on this deal. He must have been hurting for money, big time. You literally stole this stuff from him. Just the D7000, any single lens, and the SB700 is worth more than you paid for all. Some people have all the luck! Congrats.

YOU WERE BASICALLY GIVEN THEM. $1900 WAS JUST TO SAY THANK YOU. WAS THE GUY ON DRUGS OR SOMETHING? YOU COULD PROBABLY DO AWAY WITH ONE OR TWO OF THEM AS THEY DO OVERLAP AS YOU SAY. BUT MY ADVICE WOULD BE IF YOURE GONNA SELL ANY, KEEP THE NIKON GEAR.
Great deal. Keep em. Test em. Compare em. Enjoy em. there isn't really as much overlap here as the numbers might indicate to you now.
