Every time I think I have taken a georgous picture. I look at this website and feel like such an amature Iam embarrassed to post any of my pictures however being a newbie Iam dying to hear what somebody thinks of the pics I take. If I finally get up the courage to post a picture please take it easy on me.

I'm trying my best to learn but frankly just do not know what makes a great picture from a mediocre one. Thank you all for all for your post I learn a little more from each one.

Building up the courage to post a picture.........

Practice makes perfect...
There is no picture so good that it can't be improved.
Study images in picture books and at exhibitions. Analyse what makes a great picture...the right moment...the right light...the right angle...the right expression.
The good thing about being an amateur is that the only person you must please is yourself. I have some pictures that I love and most others hate. If I'm satisfied, that's all I care about (although we all like compliments.) That does not excuse sloppy work. But the idea is to please yourself while always asking what you might have done differently.
A couple of basics... Almost any picture can be improved if you put a human figure in it... cropping tighter always seems to make a better shot...shots taken early or late in the day are almost always better than those at midday...fog, mist, rain or clouds can turn an ordinary scene into a magic one.
Don't fall into the trap of thinking a better camera or lens or the latest new gadget will make your pictures better. Great photos have been made with box cameras. They are tools, not toys!
Most important of all... HAVE FUN!

I agree with everything except putting people in all images. A really beautiful scene should have horses in it!

Hey Ken, I am new here too, so I will go first. I haven't posted anything yet either. These pictures were taken with my Olympus TG1. The TG1 has some macro settings and you can set the exposure and shutter speed manually, so I was messing with that when I took these pictures. I am still reading the manual for my Canon Rebel XTI. As soon as I get it figured out I will post a picture from that camera. Remember, this is supposed to be fun! :D

FIVE pages and no photo.
Well, maybe you never will. Have we failed with our encouragement????
No one has ever been more scared to post a first time here than I was. I fianlly did it, but it was HORRIBLE. Everyone was too kind, si I kept adding pictures. (flowers). Then someone jumped in and said I loved flowers TOO much anfd that was enough. Hahahaha! I posted MORE!
A good idea to start might be to post a photo in a new thread with the title Do Not Critique!
Then in the post, type "Feel free to process my photo any way you like and post it back here for me to learn!"
You'll get tons of responses and tons of help!

Kenn...

First of all you should know that most of the people here are certifiably insane...some have broken out of mental institutions by carving cameras out of a bar of soap and passing themselves off as yearbook photographers.

Secondly, this is the kindest, and most intelligent group of photographers on the planet...I only wish I had the eyes that most folks have here...

So do yourself a favor and drink the kool-aid like the rest of us and post some pics...the worst thing that can happen is that someone will show up at your front door with a hammer in hand and ask "where is your camera?"...had that happen...but it was a learning experience.

Ok Ken, I did 2 embarrassing things right off the bat. My pictures are huge, and for some reason unknown to me, my location says I am in hiding.

I am also very new to this site and to digital SLR. I have learned so much from reading comments and posts. Don't worry about criticism from your photos as that is how you learn; from your mistakes. I only take photos in my spare time (usually on weekends), and made my first post of three that I took last week. This site has a lot of great people here that are very willing to help you become a better photographer. Thanks to everyone out there.

Ahhh...perhaps Ken is at WORK...and thats why he hasnt posted any pictures.

Personally I dont have a job...5 years ago I invested in a company that dismantles bank signs for unethical lenders...and its doing quite well.

-thank you Tina Fey and thank you for your service
