Merry Christmas all

Thinking of buying this flash. Will it work properly on
a D3100? Is it a decent flash?

Thanks in advance.

Norm.

Yes.

It is a fabulous flash.

It should work. I believe the 700 also will function as a master for other Nikon slave units

The D3100 does not have the master function for Nikon's CLS built-in. Neither does the D5100.

However the SB 700 can operate as a remote flash triggered by the D3100's flash.

Nikon makes a $15 cover for the on-camera flash that you can use to deflect the camera's flash and only use the remote flash. It lets enough light out that the SB700 fires remotely even though the on-camera flash does not affect your picture. It goes into the on-camera flash bracket.

Was the SB-700 available when the D3100 hit the market? I know they came out around the same time...

I don't have either but I expect it should work fine. An SB-700 is on my "soon to get" list.

You might find it discussed on the DVD that came with the camera. It is on the one that came with D5100.

I have it and I love it. For my use it's everything I need plus more. I have a D3100 and a D7000 and it works just fine with either camera. My problem is I need another one but want that Tamron 24-70, 2.8 first. With the use of reflectors and such it's amazing how you can get acceptable shots with just one flash. I highly recommend it if you choose not to go with one of their bigger flashes---it's proably all you will need.........

I have both the Nikon D3100 and the SB 700. They work fine together.

Super flash but you'll need to read the manual.

The manual is pretty tiny and, as with all manuals today, half is devoted to safety warnings by the lawyers.

The main thing I need to remember is to move the on switch to "remote" when using it off camera. Other than that it seems to pretty much take care of itself.

I use my SB700 as a primary flash in the hot shoe. I set it to TTL and wide angle (for my 10-24mm zoom). I shoot travel trailer interiors and exteriors for a local RV dealer.

I frop the diffuser screen, set the lens to 10mm and shoot interiors. The flash does a supurb job for my purposes.

I have not yet used it as a slave. But one of these days ...

Great flash- use it on my D7000. Works great in any mode that you put it in. Highly recommended.
