Merry Christmas all

Thinking of buying this flash. Will it work properly on
a D3100? Is it a decent flash?

Thanks in advance.

Norm.

Your cameras manual will have a full listing of Nikon flash compatibility as well as all functions available from each flash model.

Was the SB-700 available when the D3100 hit the market? I know they came out around the same time...

I don't have either but I expect it should work fine. An SB-700 is on my "soon to get" list.

Don't know when it came out, but will check my manual for
compatability. If not in there, guess I could google it.
On my Christmas list for myself haha

Just read the manual.
Mentions all sb flashes but the 700. Maybe it was not produced yet.
Will google it I guess.

It should work. I believe the 700 also will function as a master for other Nikon slave units

The SB-700 is basically a tweaked SB-600 (a few more bells & whistles).

Nikonnorm you will love the SB700 on your D3100. I have the SB700 and it worked harmoniously with my D3100(I've recently upgraded to the D600). Don't give it another thought. The SB700 will also work great with all the other Nikon DSLR's should you ever want to upgrade.

What are you using it for . If you just want to light up the party , kids , new years . You could maybe get by with the 400

One of my SB800 flash gave up on me and unfortunately, Nikon decided not to make another flash comparable to to it. My choice was the 910 that costs an arm and a lege although I must say that it is a superb flash or the SB700 which is a step up from the SB600. I decided to buy the SB700 from B&H for $326.95. By the way, it has a $30 rebate if you buy it with certain nikon bodies at this time.
I tried it yesterday with my D7000 and must say that I am very satisfied with the results. I also tried it in concert with the SB800 and it worked smoothly as well.
This flash will work without any problems with your 3100 and it will render great pics for you.

The SB 700 works wonderfully with my D 3100. I just leave it on TTL mode.
