A full and enjoyable day: Morning in Pisa, afternoon in Lucca. From Viking: “Tuscany is known equally as the cradle of the Renaissance and a center of culinary delights and astounding wines. Throughout this emerald-green countryside dotted with cypress trees, endless delights unfold. Among them is Florence, a living museum of the Renaissance. Brunelleschi’s famous Duomo dominates the medieval cityscape—an architectural achievement. Another Tuscan treasure, the Square of Miracles, unfolds in Pisa. Here, a trinity of masterpieces—the Leaning Tower, Pisa Cathedral and Baptistery—comprise some of Europe’s finest art and architecture.”

We took a coach to Pisa, about a 30 minute drive from the port of Livorno, where we also spent that night. This is the only port where we stayed overnight in our 15 days on the ship.

I took the last 3 photos in July 1973 on our 11 week trip all over Europe. Note that I climbed to the top of the leaning tower for photos 8 and 9; 49 years later I didn’t think I had the knees for that.

My next post will conclude our visit to Pisa and start our tour of Lucca. My previous post can be found at https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-802752-1.html, while the first post of this series can be found at https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-801137-1.html

Fantastic set Dennis. We visited Pisa about 15 years ago and my balance and fear of edges allowed us to reach only the third level. I doubt we'd get even that far today!

I like both versions of the tower.

Italy is on the bucket list but my knees won't allow me to climb much either.

Your post also reminded me of a trip to the Netherland about 6 years ago. My wife and I went to visit some friends in Delfgauw which is about 15 from Delft by car. There is a church there, just off of the main square that has a decided tilt to it and I captured a very nice canal shot where the trees were vertical and the church was not.

I posted here and almost fell out of my chair laughing when a fellow hogger "straightened it" for me.

Thanks Mark! I thought about it, but decided it was a bad idea to do it again. As I'm sure you recall, the steps spiral around the inside of the tower and it seemed like they were close to horizontal every 180 degrees as you climbed it.

Thank you for your comments Mike. My recommendation regarding visiting Italy: Do it! There are hills and steep streets in some places, but there are plenty of places where bad knees are not a problem. We wanted to go to Cinque Terre last year, but decided it would be too much of a challenge, especially for my wife who has a bad kneee from an injury about 20 years ago. We made it OK on our visit to Bellagio on this trip with its steep walkways (photos on a later post) and Siena last year with some steep streets, as well as other similar places. We spent about 2 1/2 weeks in Italy on our 1973 trip, about 2 weeks on this trip and a month on our Italian road trip last year, yet we still have MANY more places we want to visit in Italy, as welll as some we want to return to and we hope to do so. It is an incredible place to visit.

That's funny about your photo being straightened!

Thank you very much for your comments Joe. I can't imagine someone straightening the most famous leaning tower on the planet.

Our bucket list far exceeds the ability to fund said trips but we work it out. My wife and #2 son are leaving on Monday for a hiking trip around Ireland. We also want to visit the Tuscany Valley.

We went to England and Scotland last December and I brought home 6 bottles of the most divine Scotch. I will see if I can find the post for you, it's STILL funny,
