If you Google: "Nikon Z8 camera settings set up," you will get 303,000 hits in 0.37 seconds! I'm sure not all the hits will be helpful but they won't cost you $96! There will be different recommendations for differing shooting genres.

In the the past when I bought a new camera as in January 2023, a Nikon Z5 body, I would just Google:
"Brand, model name camera settings set up" and get tons of suggestions.

Pick your poison! Be well! Ed

I have to agree with you 100%. However, sometimes I try to figure something out about the Z9 and searching, reading and trying to figure it out through trial and error takes me more time than I have. And as the saying goes, time is money. So sometimes it’s worth it to me to take the shortcut and pay an amount to save me that time. Again, I don’t know what $96 really gets you but I would at least check it out.

Hi
I was wondering if anyone has any experience with Matt Granger setup for Nikon Z8. He charges $96 for it. Is it worth the money. His argument is that once you complete his setup, the Z8 will be easier to use and ready for any type of photography….!

Thanks

Steve Perry has an excellent ebook for about twenty books. Highly, and justifiably, recommended.

Why would anyone want someone else's setup? Especially for $96!?? Camera setups are as personal as a tooth brush! IMHO!! If the Z8 needs a "setup" to be functional for whoever Matt Granger is, there is definitely a fly in the ointment with the Z8.

Wrong, you obviously are not aware of the features that set the Z8 apart from other cameras. A good set-up book will show you how to most effectively and efficiently set up and use these features with the least amount of searching and selecting them from complex menus.

Is the Z8 so difficult to set up that it requires instruction?

No, but it is a matter of expediency. You can experiment with various settings and options for a week to decide what works best for you or go to an instructural source that will speed up the process and provide suggestions for your particular needs.

Probably Not. i have always found that if I try to use someone else's set up for my camera, and I do not perform the set up myself, that I do not know where to find the settings when I need them most. But feel free to throw your money away!

The Canon RP also has an "SCN" setting which has 12 specific settings for just about anything you may want to use on the spur of the moment, including portrait, group, landscape, sports, kids, panning, close-up, food, night portrait, handheld night scene, HDR backlight control, silent. I find these settings handy when I am confronted with an unusual situation and don't have time to do the required research. I Love my small full-frame camera body with eye focus/tracking as well as a plethora of other wonderful features that make me . . . .

No problem. Have used the SCN feature on a few occasions when I found I didn't have time to change all of the settings myself. Overall, this feature works really well. I think it is Scott Kelby who has a video on YouTube where he talks about this issue. Pointing out that the camera manufactures have spent millions of dollars on the research and development of their cameras and the features offered. His point being that we shouldn't be so reluctant to take advantage of their knowledge.

It seems a way to get money from people who do not how to read the Nikon instruction manual. If you are a photographer and I assume all members of this forum are, you can set up the Z8 by yourself like any other camera without wasting $95. On the other end, if you are a novice to photograph you may easy your life spending $95 for Matt Granger Nikon Z8 setup. But I wonder why a novice starts getting into photography with such an expensive camera.

I don’t know many people who refer to the Nikon manual. All brands of cameras have pretty sucky manuals. That’s why most of us have been suggesting YouTube videos or books by Steve Perry or David Busch. Busch has sold over one-and-a-half million copies, gives great settings in full color examples, and is less than half the price of what the “service” this post is about.

You can have Ken Rockwell's settings for free here: https://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/z/z8-users-guide.htm

I find his settings advice for the Sony RX10iv quite hellpful.

Me too. But, not only Steve Perry, but Thom Hogan also. Between the two of them, everything covered (for me) on the Z8 including the 2.0 firmware update. Question for all of you (& I don't know the answer): A lot of publishers have their books getting ready for "shipment" (via Amazon) in a few months. I'm wondering out loud if they did the 2.0 update. If they did not, who would buy the book? If they did or plan to, then I'm wondering how delayed the publications will be.

MattG what an interesting handle you have.

Im have been a follower of Matt Grange since his “that Nikon guy” days. I have many of his videos and always found them to informative and useful. But I don’t have that one. Because I work for a living it is hard finding the time to watch videos I have to plan the time.

I think if you want an in-depth tutorial that it would be a good choice.

As for the cost, a printed Z8 Ref manual is about that same cost.

One other thought is sometimes he offers sales so if you wait it might be available for a discount for a limited time in the future.

Hmmmm. 🤔

I learned from late friend and photographer and contributor here, R Malarz, RIP, to sit with my new camera and the camera manual and go through the manual trying all the settings, make notes in the manual. It can take a few days for that but I always remember it after that and I have my own notes.

However the Z8 Ref manual is PDF format and over 1000 pages and printed versions cost about $100.
