It's called the Big Bend for a reason. The Rio Grande river takes a huge bend at the lower end of Texas west of where it meets the Gulf of Mexico. It's part of the Chihuahuan Desert and is extremely desolate in sections. We took a guided off road tour with Angel Tours and got to see a lot of off road areas people don't see including a spot where a hiker died of exposure within a hundred yards of his car. Here are some of the more popular areas that you can get to in a regular car.
Other than the caldera that you can camp in, in my opinion the Santa Elena Canyon is the most spectacular spot in the area. The Rio Grande carved this over the eons. Mexico on one side, Texas on the other.

Along the highway from Lajitas to Presidio you follow the Rio Grande most of the way. Not very big here, the Rio Grande separates Mexico on the left from Texas on the right.

Our off road guides were great at stopping for some nice shots along the way. We were still pretty close to the highway at this point.

Creosote, Yucca, and cactus are about all that grow in the area. It is possible to find water if you know what to look for.

On one of the dirt roads through the park our guide showed us that if you dig by where the stands of Yucca are you can find water in small quantities.

Shot from one of the shelters along the road from Terlingua to Lahitas. While not what you usually think of as desert, this is pretty harsh territory.

What a spectacular group of shots ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I didn't see you around much before the past couple of weeks
I sure enjoy your posts and hope you continue to treat us
I am absolutely green with envy! I love these pictures. They are the type I wanted to get when I went there on a photo tour. Instead we traveled long distances to get to scenes I didn't like nearly as much! Oh well. Kudos to you for getting great pictures.
Enjoyed the pictures. Thank you for posting.

These are great shots. Big Bend NP truly is a scenic place with opportunities for great photographs. Keep in mind that it gets very hot here, so I would visit between November and March. I have been here many times--here is my best set of photographs from Big Bend.
