If not on??? Check for fingerprints?

Even though my IPad is listed on my find my IPhone Ap, I’ve never tried this on a lost IPad. When I used it on my stolen IPhone, I immediately remote locked it and left. “Lost IPhone - reward - call xxx at xxx phone number” which popped up on the screen as soon as he turned it on. Ultimately I was able to trace it all over town and the thief ultimately called and I arranged to ransom it. He didn’t show up and I remotely erased and locked it. The reason that worked is because as soon as he turned it on, it was connected to the cellular network. Unless the IPad had the cellular option, the only way for it to be located is via WiFi, and if it can’t be unlocked, I’m not clear how it will log onto a network. Hopefully the Apple aP note above will explain.

Yes You can . Apple Help tells you how to.

You can wipe it clean and then start up again with a new password and an empty drive. You can’t recover the data that was there before.

I think not if ‘Find My’ is enabled

If it fell off the car chances are it is done anyway. Time to upgrade.

If you get someone else Ipad can you just erase everything and start fresh like it's yours? The neighbor left his Ipad on top of his car and drove away so it dropped somewhere. He posted signs asking people to return it. I wonder if someone got his Ipad can they use it? Because if they can I don't think they will return it to him especially he doesn't offer a reward.

Apple makes it tough.

What I thought is that if he doesn't care about the data he has on the Ipad then he should simply forget about it. Buy another one. He has the money I know. If he cares about the data then he should offer a reward good enough so people would much rather return it to him for the reward then trying to make use of it.

Unless he disabled it, the data is likely in ICloud. When he gets the new one, he just syncs it with ICloud and everything (mail, texts, music, photos and even aps) will download over a couple of hours. In the end, he won’t be able to tell the difference. Painless (except for the $400-500). I would suggest that as everything is getting larger, he consider buying it with more memory. Also, he should absolutely change his Apple PW and consider changing the credit card associated with his Apple account (if there is one).

If your iPad dies Apple helps you get your data from the cloud onto a new iPad. Can't they do the same if an iPad is lost?

(Edit: Sorry Chris, I wrote this before I read your post!)

I had no problem rebuilding from the cloud when my IPhone was stolen.

Neither did my wife when her iPad burned up while charging.

Correct…if Find My is turned on which should always be the case IMO…it can’t be erased without knowing the iCloud password. My guess is that if one took it into an Apple Store and could prove they were the owner to the Genius satisfaction that Apple could erase it since they have software we don’t. The hard point is proving you’re the owner…and I’ve no idea what they would accept as ‘proof’.

Was it a serious fire? (mine was). It convinced me that if I ever by an EV or a plug in hybrid, I will NOT charge it in my garage.

She had the iPad on her nightstand, charging. All of a sudden she heard a sound, saw flames coming out of the side and the room filled up with smoke. She carried it to the kitchen and put it in the sink. The fire didn't last long but the smoke and chemical smell lasted for a while.

The iPad was terminally damaged (one side was split open!) We took it to an Apple store where it was clear that they had never encountered this before. After much discussion, including phone calls to Apple tech people in Texas, we got directions for mailing it and getting a new one.

Wow. I no longer charge either of ours overnight - only where I can/see monitor them. My fire was dramatic - instant blue/white flames. I grabbed one corner that wasn’t burning and dumped it the adjoining bathroom sink, it took a LOT of water to cool it down. Lots of smoke and a scorched place on the floor. Honestly, if there hadn’t been a bathroom close by, I’m not sure it wouldn’t have caused a house fire. That’s the issue with LiPos - if the charging circuit fails and it overcharges, it can combust very quickly. Don’t want to trust my house to a 25 cent transistor…

It is a bit scary, isn't it? I felt better when I saw and heard the reaction of the Apple folks. The store employees clearly had no experience with this kind of failure. And the tech folks we spoke to on the phone were eager to get the iPad and analyze it. Clearly not a common occurrence.

But, as you say, a few precautions are probably a good idea. For one, we'll try to keep the device away from highly combustible materials while it's charging.
