Corrupted Win 11 operating system - took 6 days to recover

About 10 days ago, I discovered my PC took 25 minutes to boot to Windows(11). My PC runs 24/7 with an occasional restart. Once Windows opened the internet connection was erratic. I played with it for a day or so, but I was not able to resolve the issue, including several attempts to boot to an Acronis bootable flash drive to recover my C drive. Frustrated and puzzled, I called my local computer shop. (they built the custom PC in 2021). So I disconnected the cables and power and trucked off to the shop. The next day a tech called and explained the Windows 11 installation was corrupted. We discussed the issue and decided to reinstall Windows. He offered to do that and copy my C drive applications to the newly formatted drive. I decided to have a new OS installed and I'd complete the rest. I did not think it would take too long to complete.

I backup my drives (2 NVME, 2 SSD and 2 HDD) using Acronis, to 5 external drives. Of course, some of the latest backup files were corrupted, but I found a few that were intact and was able to open and find most of what I needed for a full recovery. The completion of full recovery is almost done. I had to find old emails with some needed data and links for downloads of applications. I do not delete any emails. They remain in my Gmail inbox. I pay $.99 a month for extra storage. I've done this for many years. I have 161,000 emails in my inbox. I understand I'm rather unique and peculiar, but after arriving at 87 years of age last week, I'm used to me.

Hope I have not bored you.
Cheers,
Mark

If I was not so old and happily married Samantha, I'd propose!

Thanks,
Mark

You don't look that much older than Sam but of course she is happily married.

I estimate about 2 solid weeks to get my system back in the even of any sort of reinstall. Those people who have so little on their system that they offer the advice "oh just reinstall the OS" have never been through the pain.

I had my laptop repaired and they returned it to factory condition so I have to reinstall everything. It took a few hours to get it back to Win11 (they returned it to Win10 which it came with) and then took me few more hours to install the few software that require licensing. Then I installed the most often used programs. The rest I install whenever I want something to do or when I need to use them.

Today I reinstalled the printer. I began on Friday and I’m almost finished. If I did not have a corrupted Win 11 installation, I could have recovered everything via an Acronis back up file.

Actually, it’s good to start from scratch every once in a while.

Thanks for the reply!

Sorry to hear about your corrupt Windows… hope the fix complete to your satisfaction.

Now, for all those e-mails. 1st… they are yours and it is your right to do as you please; however, my knowing this is something I may not get over. It is like seeing or hearing something you shouldn’t have… or had rather you didn’t… and now can’t get it off your mind. Forevermore, when I see markngolf on UHH will think about all that mail. I have to admit, I am totally the other way… totally anal about keeping the old emails cleaned out. I THINK I AM GOING TO NEED THERAPY!

You did not inform us as to the corruption. What caused it, can you stop it from happening again? Where you able to reinstall from your back ups or from each of the vendors with your copy of the licenses.
Non tech minds need to know.

I back up my secondary drive only, but that includes the installers for the few apps I actually install, everything else is portable progs on the secondary drive. I never really mind reinstalling Windows - when I have to.

It wasn't a software corruption. It was hardware problem. They had to replace the screen, the motherboard and the keyboard (almost the entire laptop). After they fixed it they returned it to factory condition that is they reload Windows 10 and all the software that came with it. So after I got it I have to once again upgrade it to Windows 11 and reinstalled all the software. I bought it with the license for Microsoft Office and I could reinstall it and reactivate it online. I didn't have the backup (except the data) so I had to reinstall all the software. Which can be a good thing as I may have installed a lot of stuff that I now don't want to use any more.
