I wonder if these bags were made by the same company that made those bad air bags a few years ago. It sounds more like an activation problem, though. I suppose it's better to have it deploy in a minor accident rather than not at all.

Speaking of air bags, 10 and 2 is not a good position for your hands on the wheel if the airbag deploys. I prefer 8 and 4. Another recommendation is 9 and 3. In the news yesterday, a woman ran into a guard rail and "hurt her hand." Hand injuries are common when an air bag deploys, although the article didn't say how her hand was injured.

DETROIT (AP) — Honda is recalling more than three quarters of a million vehicles in the U.S. because a faulty sensor may cause the front passenger air bags to inflate when they’re not supposed to in a crash.

The recall covers certain Honda Pilot, Accord, Civic sedan, HR-V and Odyssey models from the 2020 through 2022 model years, as well as the 2020 Fit and Civic Coupe. Also included are the 2021 and 2022 Civic hatchback, the 2021 Civic Type R and Insight, and the 2020 and 2021 CR-V, CR-V Hybrid, Passport, Ridgeline and Accord Hybrid.

Affected models from the Acura luxury brand include the 2020 and 2022 MDX, the 2020 through 2022 RDX and the 2020 and 2021 TLX.

I read somewhere a long time ago that the air bag was implemented because people didn't wear their seat belts. If people wear seat belts then the air bags aren't needed. Although almost all people wear seat belts nowaday. I guess that's why race car don't have air bags. They don't put air bags on plane either. But shoulder harness appear to be effective.

Side airbags are most likely more beneficial as seat belts don't restrict sideways movement of a person's upper body. Their head can hit the side window.
Maybe sometimes the shoulder strap catch (locking) ratchet doesn't always work?

The driver's air bag has been recalled 3 times on my 2004 CRV. Yes, I'm still driving it.

I had several Honda motorcycles over the last 40 years and as far as I can recall none of them air bags. They didn't have seat belts either.

Absolutely. My wife’s Lexus was T-boned in the driver’s side hard enough to break the B pillar, but she walked away without a scratch partly because of the side air bags which prevented her head from hitting the broken window.

Glad she walked away!

Recalls!
Just another clever ploy to get people to bring their cars back to dealerships instead of their other shops, so they can dig up problems for Their expensive service work.

I guess it depends on the individual dealership.
I've had recalls done on vehicles and they found nothing else.....

Yupper. Just had that take place on my wife’s car. $2,100 worth of recommended service. My mechanic keeps everything up to snuff.

They do have air bag jackets now, but I left the hobby/sport before they appeared.

I tested the airbag and seatbelt combo on the wife’s Honda Accord. I’m a big fan of them now.

When a deer ran into my son's 2019 Fit, he got to test his air bag.

Maybe sometimes the lap/shoulder belts don't restrict forward movement enough, possibly, like you mentioned, the locking ratchet did not catch.

The lap/shoulder belt of the gal, who at about 60 mph slammed her Toyota Corolla (some year prior to standard airbags) into the rear of my late 60's F250, while I was moving about 3-4 mph with emergency four-ways flashing because I was rolling up on a ½ mile+ line of stopped traffic, did not prevent her folding over the steering wheel and thumping her head on the windshield, and reportedly fracturing her breastbone.

That was not because the driver's side of the Corolla was invaded by the hood and engine compartment the way the passenger's side was. Marks on the pavement indicated she jerked the steering wheel hard left about 2.5 - 3 feet before her car slammed into and went underneath my p.u. The passenger side front seat of that car was against the back seat, and the entire front passenger side was filled with hood and parts of the engine compartment.
It is so fortunate that gal had no passengers with her right then.

Unfortunately, my pickup had the standard bench seat, no headrests, and of course the seat belt was of no use to prevent the neck/shoulder whiplash and the concussion from my head snapping back and taking out the rear window of the cab....without breaking the glass.
(Unfortunately, the impact did not blast this curséd tinnitus out of my ears, either.)

Interesting. My hand and finger broke in a car crash, but airbag didn't deploy, the force of the crash threw my hand off the wheel and into the door. I like 8+4 too, but I was turning. I think hands and arms fly around, airbag or not.
