Windows 10 verses Windows 11

I am considering buying a new Windows powered laptop and find that they still offer them with Windows 10 installed rather than Windows 11. I have also heard rumors that Windows 11 is not that great and wonder which way I should go on this purchase. Frankly, I'm still using Windows 7 on my current laptop, but it never sees the internet anymore and hasn't for quite some time and think it's time for an overall upgrade. So, what's the scoop on Windows 10 verses Windows 11? Any insightful information and/or feedback on this subject would be greatly appreciated!

If I were using a computer that is not online, and were happy with the programs and performance of said computer, I would see no need to "upgrade". If you're working in a static environment (offline), there is no need for newer hardware, unless it is damaged or failing.

That said, any new Windows machine will come with version 11. Windows 10 is now several years out of date and will not be supported beyond October of 2025. There's really no choice to be made. Windows 11.

I went from 7 to 11 after 12 years when I replaced the desktop. Had 11 on the laptop for over a year before I replaced the desktop. I never used 10.
I have no problems with 11 at all.
As a matter of fact, I do like 11 more than 7, except for the "cloud drive", which I turned off.
All three of our computers are running 11.
(11 is more efficient at communicating with other computers on our house network.)
Me? I'd get 11 over 10.

Many browsers only update on 11 now (they no longer support 7), one of the reasons I replaced the 7 desktop.

At this point I'm holding off, need to replace this computer, cannot upgrade to WIN 11 and has 'lost 64 bit processing' at least for my photo program, BUT the tech info says that WIN 12 is expected this summer (July-Sept),

Then will you hold off a bit longer to make sure any bugs in 12 are worked out?
I just got a new (Win 11) desktop this past August, which replaced a Win 7 box. Love it.

We have 2 Win11 in the house, my wife's 17" laptop and my 10" travel, not the issue of Win 11 but the possibility of new hardware requirements to fully utilize WIN 12, I've been following the reports on a computer oriented site otherwise I'd be seriously looking right now.

Windows 12 is due soon... Time to buy into the present.

Computers aren't forever. Operating systems aren't forever. Therefore, software isn't forever. Eventually, nothing old works with anything new. All the old stuff might work together in isolation from the Internet, but that's no fun!

I'm inclined to buy a new computer about every seven years, because most operating systems will run about that long on it before it is declared "legacy" hardware or "unsupported." The same goes for cameras and printers.

We'll keep our Win 11 boxes until they quit or become incompatible.
May or may not upgrade to 12 on them. Good chance not.

I don't see much of a difference between Windows 10 or 11. If you buy a Windows 10 computer now you're likely to be able to upgrade to Windows 11 for free. The main difference is that when MS stopped supporting Windows 10 the internet would be the first to go. I wouldn't worry about Windows 11 being too new and all the bugs not ironed out. The bugs never got completely ironed out but Windows 11 is old enough already not to have any serious bugs.

If you buy a computer w.o. 11 or 12, be sure it can run 11 or 12. Not all 10 computers can be upgrade to 11, some security feature in the Bios, from my experience, as much age as maker related.

That's my main problem, processor cannot handle WIN 11 according to Microsoft Check Up.

I have 5 computers and none is capable of running Windows 11. Only one that can wasn't mine but luckily when I retired my company gave it to me. So I have 1 that can run Windows 11 and it came with Windows 10.

Buy it with Windows 11 - it’s a solid OS, and if you buy a new computer with 10, you’ll just have to upgrade it eventually IF YOU CAN. A Win 10 machine may not have the HW features such as TPM to allow you to upgrade. 12 is almost here, so it won’t be that long before some companies stop offering SW or drivers for 10.
