My son post Jiu Jitsu Training.
Bumps, bruises, scratches and he wouldn’t have it any other way…

I like the pose and the off-center placement. However, the darkness is a very serious problem with what is otherwise a very good shot.

It’s interesting as the original image on both my phone and my laptop are not nearly as dark but posting here and on instagram the image gets much darker.
Not sure that it’s serious but I appreciate the critique.

I find that when posting jpg's here that I have to brighten them 2/3 stop in LR. If you have this as a raw, you should consider working on this shot. It is worth saving.

Very much better. I wonder if the skin is too warm/red/saturated. What do you think? Have you thought of playing around with the cropping? Perhaps "move" him more to the left, possibly with cropping him slightly and then adding some of that black background to the right?

This is definitely worth printing and framing. A great shot of Jim at an interesting point in his life.

I actually brought some of the red down originally. He was literally 10 minutes off the Mat from 2 hours of Jiu Jitsu so the colors are pretty natural.

I plan to experiment with some of these shots.

I am experimenting with crops, and some overlays/filters with a NIK Collection plugin for photoshop

Like your 2nd post of this shot John. The lighter version is much better.

I really like the second version with a little more light. I was afraid the brighter look would compromise the mood created in the first submission, but I don't think that's the case. I also think the colors are fine and suggest the effort he just made. My take is he hasn't had time to cool down. The asymmetrical composition is also just right IMHO.
