That's why I've had my 18MP for, oh, 13 years?

Depending on what you want to do 18mp is plenty. It's all I would need.
The thing about resolution is that once you have enough there's very little advantage to getting more. All it does is give you increased cropping ability. If you're a birder that could be meaningful. Otherwise you're shredding money and I have some property in south Florida I'd love to tell you about.

In the photo below I usually spot out that black spot on the upper flower leaf. Download the image and zoom to 100% and you'll see it's a bug -- you can tell because it has legs. The sensor and lens on the camera are actually managing to resolve the legs of that bug. Without doubt that's more resolution than needed. If I hung a print of this photo on the wall and someone looked at it from an appropriate viewing distance they would be unable to see the bug's legs -- human vision isn't that good and so the resolution this camera is delivering is already overkill.

And this photo was taken with a camera equipped with a 1/1.7" 12 megapixel sensor (and it's cropped a little).

Thanks. Yes, native here in MO. My botanist wife has instructed me how they need to be photographed -- stem and leaves showing along with some indication of the environs. So the composition in this photo is conforming to the boss's requirements.

Leica M11.
The resolution was not the reason for the purchase, I used a 16MP Df for years.

61mp Sony A7RIV since they first came out in 2019. Loved it. I recently traded it in and upgraded to 61mp A7RV to go with my A1, and A7SIII.

Here a 61mp shot with my 61mp A7RIV and my Sigma Art 24-70mm f2.8 DG DN lens. The Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, California , USA. 24mm, ISO 200, f8, 1/80 sec. handheld.

Click on download to see better image quality.

Cheers and best to you all.

Nice!

Do lenses have MP ratings ?

That is an interesting question--lenses should have MP ratings. Lower quality glass cannot provide the resolution that a 61 MP sensor requires, which means that upgrading to 61 MP makes no sense unless you have quality glass that can handle this.

Sony Alpha Blog developed a chart that offers something like MP ratings for lenses. They rate the suitability of all full-frame lenses for the Sony E-mount for their ability to provide good resolution for a 61 MP camera body.
