A neighbor had their whole family in for Thanksgiving and wanted me to take their photos, different sets of people, etc. I told her I don't do people, but they insisted.

After some pp, I think the photos came out pretty good and so do they. I then had some 4x6 photos printed at CVS and had them pick out what they wanted.

Well, they do not want the glossy finish. So I went to MPIX which I've seen mentioned here a number of times. I had a chat session and wanted to find out about their finish. This is what they said, '...we have the standard semi gloss that would have a sheen but it is not glossy, or we have a deep matte giclee that would have no sheen at all..."

In your opinion, will MPIX's standard finish (semi gloss) be what my neighbor wants?

As an aside, the one photo of the whole family (of course that one) I screwed up and didn't leave enough space on the sides for an 8x10 that they want, but I can do an 8x12.

Get two 4X6's, one in each finish, and let the client pick which one they prefer.

I use luster. Matte just doesn’t let the photos pop, and glossy produces too much glare when viewed at certain angles.

I also added just a little more space on the sides since it was composed so tight, and a frame might cut into the arms.

Excellent job John. He might also consider a banner across the bottom with the family name and tear although I won' t like that. Just a suggestion.
As for finish I would perhaps print a small sample on semi- gloss and see if they like it or even can tell the difference. I find people often request things because they how heard of it from a fried a nd they usually don't know of the choices.
Many years ago I heard, on here I think, that luster finish should not be used on photos that would be framed. They said over time it would stick to glass or clear plastic used on cheap frames. I never tested it and never heard of anyone who had this problem, however.

He can't move -- he's waiting on a package from Abe's of Maine!

That is a nice shot! It is difficult to get everyone smiling in a good natural way. Too often one or two look like it has caused them pain to smile and the smile looks forced. This looks like a very nice family -- you are lucky to have them as friends!

CHG CANON had the correct answer. What's better chocolate or vanilla. Or what is the better camera?

Why wouldn't you just ask the family if they would prefer semi gloss or totally matte? And if you have Photoshop, you may be able or add more space on the sides of the photo of the family with Generative Fill to be able to print it 8x10

He’d actually need to add to the top and/or bottom.

To my eye, matte finishes never seem bright enough in smaller print sizes.

That was before I saw the photo. I did actually add to the top and bottom for the OP. Didn't you see my posts?

Luster = Luster = Kodak E surface paper...

It is the most popular paper surface used by traditional wet process pro photo labs.

It is, however, definitely not a matte surface.

A truly matte finish is very vulnerable and is appropriate only for images protected behind glass, plexi, etc.

yes, me too! That's why I don't do people. I will say, everyone 's eyes are open and they are smiling.
