I like that idea and wished the entire world would just go to an international date and time. Forget about the sunrise and sunset as a standard of time of day (the old farmer's time legacy).

When I was in the Navy a lifetime ago, not only did we have DST, but aboard the ship I was on we had "summer hours" which meant reporting to duty an hour earlier. That meant I got off around 3 PM for the rest of the day, unless it was my duty day.

I prefer using international time, whether Zulu or GMT and adjust our work day, school day, appointments accordingly. I know this would confuse most people on how to set their clocks, but once done, it would be like eating cake.

Midnight is the same no matter where on earth you are. Seven AM is the same no matter where you are. The only difference is the arbitrary time you set for a schedule. If you are in EST and you had to be at work at 8 for example, now you would have to be there at 8 + time offset from GMT which in the east would be 8 + 5 = 13:00 or 1 PM GMT. Sounds hard to begin with, but over time, it would be simple to get with the program.

When communicating with folks in different time zones, we have to do a lot of mental gymnastics to get our schedules to coordinate with theirs. We had a vendor from Israel and had to interface with them at times so it was important to agree on time and time zone.

The same could be said for international travel. Thailand is around 12 hours apart from us but they are on the west side of the international date line. This is important when returning from Bangkok around midnight (Thailand time) to know what date you need to be there for your flight (this happened to one of our relatives who missed her flight as she showed up a day late). Similarly, Okinawa is one of the last time zones of the new day, so it was easier to NOT miss your flight if you didn't keep up with the local time and date.
I like that idea and wished the entire world would... (show quote)

Just as a note there is no AM or PM in UTC (GMT) a 24 hour clock is used. 25 Nov @17:55 UTC

I have to ask. What would you prefer in terms of our clocks? The current system, in my opinion, is absolutely ridiculous. Politicians are trying to decide when and if they should do something, but they don't know what to do. They seem to be leaning toward year-round DST.

This is not something that should be determined by public opinion. According to science and medical studies, permanent DST would be a bad idea. The best approach would be to live on "Normal Time." I don't think we'll be seeing that in my lifetime, though.

Opinions?

Permanent DST! Standard time causes depression in the winter. It’s depressing to get out of work and it’s already dark!

I want standard time period. Daylight savings time for half the year is bad enough, forever is worst. About the medical effect it doesn't matter as you can always change the time you start and end your activities (whatever that is school, work or walking your dog).

If you’re retired. Not all of us have that flexibility.

I'm glad this subject came up, I have my watch and a couple non-automatic clocks to change that I haven't done yet.

If EST was year round, people would get used to that also.
With no need for changes in circadian rhythm either.

If everyone was on EST it would really be confusing. 😜🤪

What about one time zone for all the US? Some other large countries that would occupy several time zones have mandated just one time for the whole country. Could make things simple.

That might please people in one time zone. And look at those countries. China doesn’t care what its citizens think and India’s size is mostly vertical and only spans two time zones. That’s a one hour difference. The continental US is 4 time zones, 3 hours. And if you include Alaska and Hawaii all bets are off.

Everyone lives in "normal" time. That is, the "time" dictated by the revolution of the earth on it's axis, and it's orbiting of the sun. Anything else is artificial, akin to separating land masses arbitrarily into political entities, or having 7 "seas," when in reality there is only 1.

Standard Time is called Standard Time for a reason. It is the original gauge of time (with the advent of railroads) used all over the world. Daylight Savings Time makes no sense and relatively few countries bother with it. But idiots in Congress don't know any history and can't understand science. So we're doomed.

The only major countries that don’t are China, India and Japan.

It does make some sense or no one would do it. Makes little difference if close to equator but otherwise over 60 countries do it

Most of those countries only span one time zone or partially extend a second where it makes sense to stick to one.

I think we should keep to DST time in the summer and go ahead another hour in the winter.

EST, for time zone continuity.

But I just go with the change... No biggie.

Ok for East coast, maybe. Eastern time zone for EVERYONE? That has got to be one of the stupider considerations ever made.

Sundown in Eastern area would mean the West Coast would have three more hours to go prior to sunset . . . .

Why not just move the clock back thirty minutes and not change it again until the second Tuesday of next week?

Or just change it every other odd third Thursday in October. FORWARD (to Daylight time) on EVEN numbered years, then BACK (to normal time) on ODD numbered years.

Then we could get EVERYONE pissed off and confused (even more-so).

Simple solution. Keep DST year 'round.

As for the problems with schoolchildren being out in the dark, CHANGE THE STARTING AND ENDING TIMES FOR SCHOOLS DURING THE SHORTENED DAYS! It does seem that that is the major hang-up for the argument. That way those times could be tailored for the ares where the problems are.

It is not law. We voted it down in Oregon numerous times but the legislature shoved it you know where. They know much better than us stupid voters. This was when I was little. My dad always said that you can't change the sun and if you want to go to work an hour early, go but leave the clocks alone. We are farmers. Plants and animals don't know daylight time. They know the sun. Get real.
