Speaking of serious. It is a very well known fact that most who fall off over the edge of the earth are slapped back up and unto the surface by the elephants supporting the disk. The rest are left as food for the tortoise on whose back the elephants stand.

That is true of many conspiracies. I used to work with a guy who thought the moon landings were faked. His belief was that the people of NASA at that time and the movie company hired to fake it was under threat of death if they ever revealed the "truth".

I asked him one day if he found it strange that now that many of these NASA workers and movie people were dying of old age and other infirmities NONE had ever revealed the "truth" on their deathbeds. It would seem that a few of the thousands that would have been involved would spill the beans. But none have, makes you think.

I also pointed out the laser reflecting device left by one of the Apollo missions that has been used numerous times by INDEPENDENT organizations to measure the exact distance to the moon by bouncing a laser from Earth to moon and back to Earth. He his only comment was that these other INDEPENDENT people were in on the deception.

This illustrates how conspiracy theorists protect and justify their beliefs. What they say is always the "truth". Anything said by others is part of the conspiracy and is false misinformation. So no amount of facts or justification can be presented that threaten their belief. This is true of the moon landings, flat earthers, or even the 9/11 conspiracies. It is a circular argument. Even facts one presents are considered false, therefore those facts existing and being false in their mind is further proof that the conspiracy exists.

The Greeks had proven the earth was round more than a thousand years before NASA was around. Eratosthenes of Greece was able, using math and geometry, to calculate the circumference of the earth.

Of course, man has been in space since the 1950s using calculations involving orbits around a spherical object. Space travel around the earth has been accomplished by numerous countries, many unfriendly to each other politically, and none have confirmed the flat earth belief.

These facts though are disputed by flat earthers and again, as I said in another post, are considered to be part of the deception, that supports their views.

All of this supports one of my beliefs. If the Greeks proved the earth was round several thousand years ago and people today believe the earth is flat, then maybe the human race is NOT getting any smarter!

I think the Greek astronomer Eratosthenes made the observations and measurements used in his calculations in Egypt.

A flat earth would not require communication satellites. Most radio-based communications are limited by "line of sight". In other words if radio waves are blocked by a mountain OR by the curvature of the earth then communications cannot take place. Only in a few situations can radio waves curve around the earth, most dependent upon frequency and atmospheric conditions.

In a flat earth situation everywhere on earth would be line of sight since all points lie on the same flat plane. There would be a few places blocked by mountains but most points would be line of sight.

Communication satellites do line of sight since at their altitude they can see around the curvature of the earth. An uplink station in the United States is in direct line of sight to a geosynchronous satellite which can then downlink directly in line of sight to a station in Europe or Asia. There are also satellites that can link to other satellites in orbit allowing signals to reach places on the opposite side of the spherical earth.
