I used to hunt them in the soybean fields on my uncle's fields in Missouri. Really good in a crockpot!

Destructive little Bastards
Sharon live in town , had a Ground hog get into one of her flower beds then tunneled under her concrete porch, she paid a lot of money to have strapped and removed. I would have removed it for her for nothing but there is something about shooting in the town
One animal I have no love for!!

That's because you were shooting them as varmints. I used my .222 with solids. I was helping feed my eleven siblings. My Mom would have been very disappointed if I brought home mush! But she would probably still have found a way to turn it into food!!

Me too when I was a kid growing up in upstate NY. They are pretty good fried or in a stew as well. Western marmots are basically the same animal with that same great taste.

I have shot them with .22 LR, .22 Magnum, 257 Roberts and a 243 Winchester. The last two pretty much ruined them for eating purposes but the .22 LR and .22 Magnum kept them pretty much together and edible. God did His best to make targets. What we do with those targets is up to us.

Excellent photos of the woodchuck. Amazing little targets, er, um, I mean mammals but destructive.

We grew up poor, twelve kids to feed. There wasn't always meat on the table. Boiled potatoes were a staple. But between me and my two older brothers, we usually could bring something to the table. And we weren't too particular as to what it was. I became a very good shot with my used Remington model 600 .222. Cheap ammunition! That pose in photo number one was perfect!! Short barrel or not, it was/is a tack sharp shooter! A head shot with solid .22cal bullets left very little ruined meat!! And we all benefitted from the protein! Those were the days!!
