Norway Cruise

Some time ago one of our members gave a review on a Hurtigruten ferry boat cruise out of Bergen, Norway, travelling as far north as the Article Circle. This was reported by a number of members, as one of the best photographic experiences in the world with photographic lectures each evening. I am planning to take this adventure
and am wondering what the best season of the year would be from a photographic point of view.
Thanks, Houston

I did a similar voyage on Viking Ocean Cruises, Bergen to Nordkapp then to Scotland and London to end. This was 2019 last week of June, first week of July. The weather was not kind to us as we were under cloudy and rainy skies for much of the trip. We missed the spectacular scenery in the Lofoten islands (a must-see location on such a voyage) and Nordkapp had better visibility but was miserably cold, rain and high winds. I would guess we just got bad luck but if I were to do it again, I'd recommend more toward the end of July. You would still get the long days but maybe the longer heating period might clear the skies for you.

We took a wonderful cruise through the Norway fjords during the early part of June last year. We were lucky with the weather, but we knew it could be highly variable and packed lots of layers. Be sure to take a rain jacket and rain pants, which protect against the wind as well as the rain.

It is a spectacular area to cruise (I posted some pics on the website below), and I hope the weather gods cooperate for your trip. Good luck!

The weather can always be unpredictable. This summer was rainy and cool in the south and warm and summer like in the north. September will be less expensive. There is also the train from Bergen all the way to Halden, The mountains and glaciers are spectacular and the trains have panoramic viewing with the glass almost 360 degrees. I live in Halden, so don't forget to see come the historic fortresses in both Fredrikstad and here in Halden! From Halden you can travel by train to Stockholm also... Dont be afraid of the weather, the skys are always best with a bit of drama and the late day light lasts for hours instead of minutes like in the USA.

As others indicated, the weather is unpredictable and changeable year-round.

One more thing to consider is daylight. In June and July, it never really gets dark, even below the Arctic Circle. So there is something to see (and photograph) all night long. That midnight light really is special. I would try to capitalize on that. Inversely, between October and February, the nights are long and the daylight little.

In total this is somewhat off topic! But a link to Tim's Photos address shouldn't be missed!

Many thanks for your valued insights. I’m also wondering about fall colour or spring wildflowers. Housty
