Good Morning HedgeHogs,

I keep getting confused over which of my batteries are charged and which are not.
I have two or three each of different styles of battery for different camera bodies and once they are charged I have no way of identifying them against the discharged ones.
Apart from a sticky label or writing on them, (which isnt particularly convenient), do any of you have a clever way of noting which are charged and which are discharged?

Your getting confused ! I think your all ready there. You dont deserve a answer , if you cant seperate your batteries , charged , and dead , What kind of brains useits. stick your tonge on the leads then you can tell. Or get two belly packs on a belt one on each side. Like the joggers ware for ther wallet etc., or just stick your head in a gas oven. and it will come to you.

I have a spare batt for each camera. It came in a small plastic container. I keep the spare in my camera bag. The one in camera is charged but discharging with use. The spare is always charged. When the working one gets down, I swap the good one in & recharge the spare asap.
Always power there to use & always a full spare.

It's a shame that some of you come along and start to spoil it...

People should be able to converse and say what they want on this forum with the aim of being friendly & helpful.

Instead, some of you find it necessary to take the piss and twist some of the statements made...
Prior to making your flippant remarks you should read the posts properly.
That way you wont get the "wrong end of the stick" and look so stupid.

And by the way...... Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit... Grow up....

Just keep ALL your extra batteries (including those you take out of the camera when you don't intend to use it for a few days) and place them each is a separate clear plastic bag -- by the pair if you put 2 at a time into your camera -- and then MARK the bags. When you have a pait that are run down, just put them in an unmarked bag. So you may start your day's shooting with one or even 2 bags of charged batteries in so-marked clear plastic bags, and with a couple of empty clear bags
ready for discharged batteries thru the day. You'll go likely go thru 2 or 3 sets on a cold day. Michael O'
Incidentally, I see someone has told you to recharge batteries that are even a bit down. Canon says battery life is longer if you run them virtually all the way down or close to it before you recharge, unless impractical.

That Canon remark must have been written for older style batteries.

Yes, I'm sure it was. And many folks have older cameras with NiCad batteries, so it can get confusing when we are discussing the newer Lithium batteries.

For AA batteries:

Charged ones into the clear side, used ones into the orange side.

I'm fascinated that this is such a popular topic and poses a conundrum for so many folks.
Lots of ideas; many are quite viable and practical.
I guess I'm luckier than I realized that this has never posed much a problem for me.
Probably more dumb luck than a flawless battery management system.

I have a related question. I have two batteries for my Canon SX40 camera. I keep one in the camera until it's all discharged, then put the other one in. But sometimes it's several weeks until the battery in the camera is discharged. I hate to put a battery in my camera that might be close to being fully discharged due to shelf life. On the other hand, I don't want to recharge a battery that is only partly discharged. Question: does anyone know the approx. shelf life of a (practically) new battery for the Canon SX40? Thanks.

Dick h : just put them in your charger regardles , do you have a green light or red light , telling you if its charged or not, i would top it up no matter if its 3/4
Discharged or 3/4 full . Battres are cheap compared to the rest of the photo
Taking equipement. If you wreck one in short order you will know you cant top them up. I have even topped the ones with the so called memory up for
Years with no ill effect , go figure.

I THINK I HAVE THE ANSWER !!(and I read every post)
I have only one battery.
It's either in my camera being used or on the charger being charged.
But never both at the same time. This system has worked well for me.

Yes, my charger has a light so I know when it is fully charged. It used to be with rechargeable batteries that if you recharged them when there was lots of power left in them, that the battery would "remember" that amount and wouldn't charge fully any more. But apparently batteries no longer have that liability.

I do like having two batteries, because when I'm out shooting, and my battery is about to give out, it's good to have that fresh one in my pocket.

Well, without question,
YOU HAVE THE PERFECT SYSTEM AND ANSWER
to this complex and widely befuddling conundrum. Thanks!

Mine come from the vendor in plastic boxes that hold 4 batteries. When they're charged, I point them all the same way in the case. When they come out of the camera, I point two up and two down.
