Jack, beautiful B&W photography. I think it would be interesting to see these two shots in color as well.

Thanks Jim. Sorry but I shot it on b/w film. It was a dull, sun bleached, dusty JD green.

I found this old stylized John Deere D wasting away in a little farm town. I virtually grew up on an older un-stylized D in my youth. At least the owner had the exhaust covered up. Captured many years ago on medium format film.

Great shots, thank you.
What can I look for that identifies it as a John Deere?

Hmmm, I'm not sure how to answer that. It's a stylized D but there are no obvious logos or writing. There is of course the flywheel on the left side which appears to be a non-electric starter model, which could mean that it's an early stylized that had to be hand cranked to start. I'm not certain when electric starters became options. John Deere made D's from, I believe, 1923 to 1953, setting a record for how long a single model was produced. I would recommend you look up John Deere D tractors on utube or on the internet and see the difference between unstylized and stylized D's.

I will research it JackM. It’s most interesting to me and I love photographing working farms and the machinery that keeps it productive,
past and present.
