I found this old stylized John Deere D wasting away in a little farm town. I virtually grew up on an older un-stylized D in my youth. At least the owner had the exhaust covered up. Captured many years ago on medium format film.

Interesting….
Hmmm, do you think that’s an original stock seat setup? I’m thinking the shock absorber.
Any idea what year it might be? 1930s? Something just doesn’t look right…..

Thanks 47greyfox. The shock absorber was added at some point later, not stock. The tractor has to be a 1939 or later (up to 1953) because 1939 was when John Deere "stylized" their tractors. My dad's was a 1936 I think.

Thanks tradio. One of my grandfathers had an 8N which my brothers and I loved to drive when we were kids. He also had an International M for heavier field work.

The model D was definitely the “Boss” of the early days. This one looks to be in good condition with excellent sheet metal, it would be a great restoration. Each fender could be worth the original tractor cost. Nice find and great photo.

I thought the same thing about it being a good candidate for restoration when I saw it 15-20 years ago. I remember briefly thinking I should make an offer for it. The one I grew up on was un-stylized. My brothers and I own an old GP but I'm more fond of the D's.

I think 1939 was the first year that JD equipped their tractors with rubber tires, as well. My grandparents had a very similar JD with steel wheels all around that was an early 30s version. Also, I think 1939 was the first year for the iconic model "A." Growing up on a NW Iowa farm, my dad owned a 1952 or 3 "A" with the rollomatic front wheels. All the local farmers thought he should have traded in one or both of the JDs years before he retired. Farmers love new machinery, you know. But....when I left in 1965 for school, the A and a diesel D and a lonely IH model M was all going strong. The A had been overhauled in the early/mid 60s. Other than that, all were drive train as builts. Thanks for the memory.

The unstylized one I drove as a kid had rubber tires but I don't know if it came from the factory that way. I'm certain that my dad bought it used. It was his very first tractor as a farmer. He later purchased a stylized G also but he didn't let us kids drive it until we were a little older.
