What do you think of this camera Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 VII ?. I have an older Sony FX80. It still works and takes great pics and video. Of course neither one compares to my Canon R6 mirrorless. Just wondering if it's worth the expense. It's just a pocket camera to capture shots on the go.

What will the DSC-RX100 do for you that the FX80 will not?

I have the RX 100 VI, which replaced my RX 100 III, which I converted to an IR. It is the camera I carry when I am not going out shooting.
The only complaint I have is that the images at extreme telephoto are mildly grainy, but other than that it does what I need. A few images attached.
The first image was taken through the windshield of my car, and the third shows extreme telephoto.

I had an RX100 original. It is currently taking pictures in Spain with my granddaughter.

I didn't know I needed or wanted a new camera. My wife surprised me with a Sony RX100 VII gift a couple months ago. It is an amazing camera. It does more things well than it should. Best of course, is how small it is.

Buy one from a reputable store with a satisfaction return policy. My bet is that you'll keep it.

Are there any specific questions you have?

Balance the price for the Sony 20MP cropped pocket-size against the Canon PowerShot offerings of the same size and pixel resolution. These two posts are recent GX9II results, captured in Canon's CR2 RAW and processed in LR6.

You can see a representative mix of macro / close-up and distance landscape / cityscape. I used to have a circa 2003 Cyber-Shot that eventually died (actually, the battery) that was easier to replace than fixing (finding another battery). I have 17-years experience and tools for working with Canon RAW files, so it was rather seamless to work with the GX9II files from another Canon camera.

Canon has several models, so you can search for the right mix of focal-length and screen display that fits your needs for a pocket-sized camera. Sunday I carried mine up 94-flights of stairs, in my hand the entire way, to capture pics from the observatory level.

My 5 large cameras are all canon, but I have 3 of the Sony rx100’s. The Sony RX100 VII has much longer lens 200mm, wider lens 24mm, much better video, better flash, tilt screen, does selfies, way faster fps, to name the few differences. The canon is a lot cheaper and a bit lighter.

It's a fantastic travel camera. For someone not interested in ultra-telephoto or ultra-macro or extremely shallow DOF photography, it can easily replace an APS-C or FF mirrorless. Noise reduction software obviates the main disadvantage of the 1" sensor. To me, though, the biggest issue is the small viewfinder. It takes a lot of the fun out of shooting. Others might not be bothered by this.

Having an older DSLR, the rear touch screen is an enjoyment on the GX9II. I have the camera configured for AI-SERVO (continuous AF) so I compose and touch the screen to set a specific AF point, half-press the shutter to focus at that point and shoot. I can easily adjust the camera / composition to the AF point or retouch the screen to reset / refine the AF position.

The IBIS is wonderful. Never any camera shake, except maybe when I get into slow shutters in the 1/30 sec or slower range. Here, I just adjust the shooting mode and manage the shutter to say 1/60 sec, something I know I can hold steady, and let the camera manage the AUTO ISO.

I have owned the camera for 4 years.

I could not be happier.

Can do everything more expensive cameras can do.

Wonderful IQ.

Yes it has a 24-200 lens that can be internally expanded via Sony's Clear Image Zoom to 400mm
with little change in IQ.

I just came back from Antarctica and could not be more pleased with it use.

However its your choice of course. I am not into just buying and buying.

I only buy new equipment when I really need it. Often it is the Photographer not the equipment that need to improve.

It’s Way more than a pocket camera! It can do Everything! We went out West for 3 weeks last year and I never took my Sony RX10M4 out of its bag. Took hundreds of pictures with the RX100VII and they are Great! It’s very small and can fit in a big pocket. My only suggestion if you purchase one is to get the Sony grip. It’s the Best small camera you can buy!

If you have any interest in shooting or learning to shoot video, the RX100 VII is as good as it gets. There is an option to get it bundled with the "Shooting Grip Kit". It is a remote, grip and table top tripod. It includes a cold shoe bar. Add a Rode "Video Micro" or "VideoMic Go II" and you have a superb video kit.

Note that the VII version added a good mic input that previous versions lacked.

The grip does enlarge the camera and negates some of it's compactness. But it adds a lot of stability and hand holding security when you might be in a serious shooting mode.

I recently bought this grip: JCC HG-RX100VII. It’s amazing But adds bulk. All metal, Big grip handle, great manufacturing. Perfect for someone with larger hands!

I got an RX100 VII just prior to going on a cruise back in 2019 and it has become my go-to camera. It has a superb AF system and a very sharp lens. It may be compact, but it has pretty much everything a big mirrorless camera has. In fact, one of the pro camera review sites said the Sony RX100VII is an A9 in a small body. I agree, the Sony finger grip is almost a necessity. Some will complain that the buttons are too small, but the Fn button allows you to program in up to 12 features or controls so you don’t have to wade through the menu to find them. I have to agree that the Canon compact cameras are great, but unlike the RX100VII, the G7XII and G9XII don’t have an EVF. I was considering both of these, but lack of an EVF was a deal breaker. Also, the RX100VII has a zoom range of 24-200mm eq. while the two Canons have a much shorter lens, albeit, faster at f/1.8 as opposed to the Sony’s f/2.8. The Canon G5Xii is a close competitor of the RX100VII, but has a shorter zoom range. That was my second choice.

The RX100VII has been a great camera and I can say you would not be disappointed with it.

I always have my RX100 VI with me when I go out; hiking to mountain, strolling in the beach or watching my grand children playing. I found a perfectly fit and nice looking grip with metal and leather inserts. Got it on a trip in Korea but I found out you can buy it on Ebay. It's a little pricey but it accentuates the RX100 nicely.

Well written! Sometimes I wonder when and if there will be an 8th version. But, when I think about it, I don't know what I would want Sony to add or change.
