It appears that Canon might be licensing the RF mount to Sigma as the Sigma CEO talked of a new Auto Focus RF mount lens. Hopefully this is true. I don't like using a locked system. While I do have Windows 11, it is running as a container under Linux.

I'm ready to make the switch to mirrorless after using a Nikon D60 since it's release in 2008. I have only the kit lens. I've narrowed it down to a Nikon Z6II and a Sony a7III. I will be using it for general photography (landscape, action shots and portrait). Just can't seem to make up my mind. I've relied on the opinion of all that contribute to this forum. I could use all the input I can get. I would also value any advise about alternate recommendations.

I look forward to your replies.

I'm definitely no expert; I don't get out and shoot enough anymore. I used to have mainly Canon and Sony cameras. I went to Nikon awhile back. I now have a Nikon D5200 and a D750. Right now I feel like I should have stayed with Sony. Just a deep feeling. Good luck with your decision. Maybe I should have stayed with Olympus. I have had the most satisfaction with Olympus and Sony.

I have shot using Canon mainly. I find that the menu system is IMO the best and the articulated display a must.

Determine your budget, first.

Then keep an open mind and choose from Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fujifilm, Panasonic Lumix, and OM-Systems (formerly Olympus). ALL of these brands have some excellent choices. You can find plenty of reviews on line, especially at dxomark.com, dpreview.com, and numerous YouTube channels. Lumix, OM Systems, and Sony have been making serious mirrorless models longer than anyone else. But the others learned from their pioneering efforts!

Plenty of folks here will tout the brand they use, but in reality, high quality is a given these days, and anything you get is likely to last 5-7 years, when you'll probably want another one.

This discussion is beginning to sound like the old religious arguments about how many angels can fit on the head of a pin - the main point appears to be go and try holding each one you are considering- see what feels comfortable and how the controls, menus, etc work for you - I went from a Canon 7D (heavy) to a Canon M50 and I find that I still prefer 7D with an 18-200 lens - just not comfortable with the mirrorless menus and controls

Although all the logics says 'mirrorless', there's no logical reason to change brands too.

so are you recommending a Canon Mirrorless if one already shoots Canon now? I hav been seriously thinking about purchasing a mirrorless. thanks

Since all Canon EF and EFS lenses work seamlessly (and probably better) on an EOS mirrorless body with the EF-RF adapter, yes, that's why I'd subjest the same for a Nikon to Nikon user.

You can't really go wrong with Canon, Sony, or Nikon at this point…pretty much similarly priced models provide similar performance. Another reply talked about Sony having more 3rd party lenses…but this is irrelevant to me. A bigger deal…at least to me…is ergonomics in physical handling and familiarity with the menu system. While more advanced…the menu system on the Z bodies is pretty similar to that on earlier Nikon DSLR bodies…and it is markedly different from that on a Sony body. I believe that the Sony menu system changed considerably between models a couple years back but have no details. For me…the familiarity of the Nikon menu system and the fact that I could use my F mount lenses until building out my Z mount selection was another factor pointing to Nikon…but if one is familiar with either Sony or Canon and has older lenses that can be adapted until building out the new mount kit then the same would be true for a Sony or Canon DSLR user.

I personally would recommend the Z7II over the Z6II…higher megapixels…unless the low light performance is really the top priority…the 6II is slightly better but both are leaps beyond most of the F mount bodies overall…and the Z lenses…like the new mount Sony and Canon lenses…are simply better than the ones designed 15 years ago.

But to emphasize my first sentence…you can't really make a bad decision here. I suggest borrowing or renting or just going into the store and picking up the various bodies you're considering and see what feels the best to you…then take that as well as menu familiarity, lens adaptability, etc into the decision process.

The various fanboys…of which I'm not one that much…will tell you that X has better AF or Y has more lenses or whatever…but all of those factors may or may not be of importance to you…and everybody…particularly fanboys…will say that their brand is better…but take that with several grains of salt. I shot Canon F1 and EF bodies for years back in the day…and they were just fine. I like the hand feel of the Z bodies better than the Sony bodies…and I like the menu system better…but both of those are highly likely to be because that's what I've been using and if I had Sony or Canon I would feel the same about them.

Go ahead. I gave in too. I didn't go mirrorless but went with a D-850. Perhaps someday I will go mirrorless but at my age, barring some accident or catastrophic failure, the 850 should last me the rest of my life.

They are both capable camera bodies.

Sony has more native glass...way more.
Sony has more third party options...because of the very same reason...they have been doing it longer...and so have the third party lens manufacturers (for Sony E mount).

It doesn't mean you cannot flush out your glass desires with Nikon...just less choices.

There are no bad choices out there. I would recommend renting both cameras. Many rental companies let you buy your rental at a discount. I may be wrong with the new Nikon models but many of the Nikon sensors were made by Sony. My thought was: why not just stick with the source...Sony.... in the first place. I use to own the a7iii and moved to a used a9. But today I might recommend the a7c over the a7iii because it has a faster focus. No bad choices out there. Note: the a7iii is excellent with low light and star shots.

Since I started my digital with Canon, I have stayed with it and have no issues. However, the current Canon policy of not allowing 3rd parties to sell RF mount lenses would have me worried if I were just starting out. I use an EF-R adapter and don't worry about it.

I can't explain why, but I seem to rate Sony above Nikon in mirrorless, perhaps because they have been at it longer.
