Not criticizing at all, because it is beautiful, but it appears there is a bit of a halo effect around the hills. I get that often when masking and sharpening an image. Does this shifting you describe produce that effect too? I would like to see the image before shifting for comparison.

You hit it on the nose, Bill. I used an Arca Swiss 4x5 view camera with a Graflok back. I removed that back and replaced it with a shift/stitch back on which I mounted a Nikon D700. The image is composed of 6 individual captures made by shifting the back within the image circle projected by the lens mounted on the 4x5. Those 6 images were then stitched together to make the final photograph.

I would guess that you are being a bit cryptic about your choice of tools. The one camera I've seen that would do this was a very expensive view camera that one of my former employer's clients used for photographing HUGE panoramas of marching bands. It moved the film back from side to side within the projected image circle. It was a *very* large and heavy beast.

Wow! That's cool that you were able to mount the D700 on the shift/stitch back. Is that a commercially available tool, or did you build or have it built?

In any case, that is a great view!

Yes, I'm aware of the halos and wrote a process for eliminating them. Since this was a prototype image to prove the concept, the halos were a secondary issue I knew I could quickly solve. I prefer experiments to be kept as simple as possible to avoid a lot of debugging, if necessary, by including too many processes.

Bill, it's a commercially available product made by Fotodiox. I can attach any of my Nikon cameras to this product. After using the unit, I provided them with a slight modification to remedy a potential issue. They were apparently grateful. Using another of their backs, I can also attach the digital backs I use with my Hasselblad.

Don't understand how I might do that, but it's a great shot in spite of my lack of comprehension

Thank you, Joe. Time and circumstances permitting, I'll do a few photographs of the setup.

I suspect this panorama was created using a PC lens (perspective control) where the projected image cicle is shifted, within limits, on the lens.
