Done by shifting the sensor within the projected image circle rather than moving the camera/lens.

I would guess that you are being a bit cryptic about your choice of tools. The one camera I've seen that would do this was a very expensive view camera that one of my former employer's clients used for photographing HUGE panoramas of marching bands. It moved the film back from side to side within the projected image circle. It was a *very* large and heavy beast.

There is also the Widelux that covered a wide format on 35mm and medium format film by swinging the lens. The camera was expensive at the time but cheap by today's standards.

Another approach was the Hasselblad X-Pan (35mm film only) that captured an even wider image (24x65mm) with a lens that had a wide image circle. You could switch between panorama and 24x36 in mid roll. It was a very high quality camera, solid as a Leica. I had a 45mm and 90mm lens for it. It seemed like a good idea at the time but working with the wide image in the darkroom was a challenge so I stopped using it and sold it to KEH who still have the lenses but rarely the body.
