I am considering (for budget reasons) getting a Nikon tc-14 II 1.4 teleconverter to use on a Nikon 18-300 af-s lens on my d7500 for extra reach. Possibly on my Tamron 18-270 af-s lens on my d7000 as well. Would appreciate any thoughts & advice. Thanks.

Have one. Use it occasionally.

Waste of money on the Nikon lens with the loss of a stop and typically less clear image quality and can't be used on the Tamron.

Aside from other considerations you have to make sure that teleconverter will physically fit one or both of those lenses. The TC-14s all protrude to the front. Which means any lense you wish to pair them with needs to have a recessed rear element. Otherwise you are scratching your glass and damaging the internals in a big hurry.

Looking at a picture of the 18-300 it does not have the recessed rear element. It won't work!!!
The Tamron might be ok but you have to check.

A Nikon TC physically will not work - a Kenko MIGHT - IF - you can get the 7500 to auto focus - which is doubtful. Optimize your native lens's image quality and CROP and use pixel enlargement software if making larger prints.

Appreciate the advice everyone. I was just now able to find a compatibility chart from Nikon. I see that neither lens would be compatible. I also noted that no lens with what one would call a wide angle range is listed as compatible either. UHH members are always a good source of information & greatly appreciated.

You might as well just use the digital zoom.

I don't recommend a tele converter on any zoom lens. Great for prime lens

A Nikon 1.4 teleconverter will not work on your lens. And that's a good thing considering that teleconverters have never increased sharpness of any lens. Personally I would work on learning how to get physically closer to your subject.
PS. A good used Nikon 200-500 should not cost too much more than a new Nikon 1.4 and will deliver much better sharpness.

I disagree. The 1.4x and 1.7x converters work quite well on the 70-200/2.8. Look - as others have mentioned, no one should use a TC on ANY lens expecting perfection. I use TC’s when I must have a longer reach and I know that resulting image will “suffer” to some degree. It is my choice of last resort, but if I need it, I need it and don’t obsess about degrees of degradation.

I am guessing that the OP might be considering the 1.4 thinking that it a routine substitute for longer glass. If so, that’s a mistake and someone looking for that will probably be disappointed.

As far as other zooms, I would never use a TC on a zoom lens less than f4 and never ever try it with on a “one lens for all focal lengths” lens. Those do it all lenses have enough compromises builds in without adding a tc and they are too slow too boot. Even on fast primes, TC’s seldom yield great results unless that prime is killer sharp. I use my Nikon 1.4 (and even my 2x on rare occasions) on only 2 lenses. The 70-200/2.8 and my 400/2.8, both of which are Nikon lenses.

Long way of saying that no TC is going to give good results on the lens OP asked about, even if the mechanical connections can be made to work. Of course my definition of “good results” may differ greatly from his. There are, after all, a lot of TC’s sold annually.

Just got a Sigma 1.4x TC -- mainly for use with a Sigma 100-400 contemporary lens. Main reason was to get a little extra reach with wildlife photography.

Before getting it, I had some concerns. First -- Sigma suggests autofocus may be a problem with apertures smaller than f/8. Since my lens' widest aperture f/6.3 at 400mm -- it meant I'd be at f/9. Would the TC work? Since I usually shoot at f/11 light permitting for landscape and wildlife (with no AF problems) I suspected I'd be ok.

Second -- sharpness -- major concern since the Sigma Contemporary 100-400 isn't the sharpest lens in the world to begin with.

That being, I had the opportunity to pick up a used converter for $100. So there's not a great downside.

Results -- with good light and contrast, the AF works at least through f/16. So the TC will be fully usable on nice days (at least) and at night (when I have to manually focus anyway).

Sharpness -- this is obviously a matter of personal choice. I posted a couple of pictures yesterday in the Bird subforum. Here's one of my shots that I didn't post there. Ultimately, the sharpness is for my purposes.

My ultimate conclusion -- I won't use it all the time with this lens. (most of the time 400mm is enough) but nice to have and light to carry.

I have the 18-300 Nikkor lens. Last year I bought the Tamron 18-400 and love it. The extra reach is nice and the sharpness is much better than you would ever get using a TC

You need to tell us what BODY you are using - it matters for AF. ..... You should be mostly shooting wide open (f6.3) to save shutter speed and/or ISO - not sure you fully understand this. AF does NOT care what aperture you are stopping down to - only the max wide open aperture because that is what the camera uses to focus with.

Fair enough -- this was with a Nikon z-5/ftz
