Taking out the lights, even though only slightly lit, brings a whole different feeling to the image: it isolates the beautiful lighting on your subject and brings to fore the purpose (subject) of the image. Really makes them stand out. I don't believe (to my eye) it leaves them in limbo at all. Agree w/ keeping the negative space above!
Tweaking the salt w/ a touch of brightness ( luminosity mask perhaps?) would bring out more of the dark/ light aspect of this image - simply by following what the lighter spots are in the salt shaker. The illumination on the shakers themselves is superb.
Just a thought(s) - however, another great still life image.
