I see a movie coming: "Ghost Writer".

I have two Epson printers and have never heard any noises when they were off. If it is connected to the internet, it may be looking for an update.

I'm sitting here alone, in the dark, at 6:15 AM, and my printer makes that noise that printers make occasionally. A couple of seconds later, it made that noise again. The printer is turned off. No lights are lit. This is a new one on me. Creepy.

As I've said before, printers are weird. If this Epson ink tank has a paper jam, there is no way to get it to continue printing without turning it off and waiting. The LCD tells me there is a paper jam, and it shows me, step-by-step how to clear it. There are nine or ten buttons on the front panel, but every one I press gets me the message "Invalid." Turning it off and waiting before turning it on is the only way to continue. Even then, I have to first clear the print job and tell it to print the remaining pages, or it will start from the beginning.

My other Epson sometimes acts like it's 100 years old. It can take several minutes to start up, and it can take another few minutes to start printing. The funny thing is that it's not consistent. Sometimes, it will start right up. Other times, I can have lunch while I'm waiting. Last week, it took ten minutes to shut down. Canon and HP printers have also behaved strangely.

To the “spirits in your house”… is it more likely that it is the spirits in you?

Actually, it is most likely aliens. Good thing you moved when you heard it. If you had remained still, sitting in a dark room, they may have cut some parts off you like they do to cows. It is for research… a good cause.

Then again… you may be going insane

Some printers rotate some rollers to keep them getting flat spots. This is usually when they are asleep not off. Try making it is really off. Some of the newer copiers I worked on could be not turned completely off we had to unplug them before working on them.

I wouldn’t worry until it starts printing strange messages on its own😳

Unfortunately, I did not have any "spirits" in me that early in the morning. As for going insane, I'd have to rely on others to tell me.

It cycles to keep the rollers from developing a flat spot.

I just resolved the same problem. My printer would almost never start to print right away. I suspected it might be a router problem, since it was about 5 1/2 years old. Once replaced, my network response for printing (2 different printers for 2 different computers) became lightning fast again.

So, if you are having a problem like that, check router issues (age, strength of signal, placement, etc.).

My printers are connected directly to the computer.
