There’s a D800 for sale locally for $500 with 40k shots. Any opinions from you folks with experience?

My research has shown negatives such as large files taking up computer space and slow to download, slight movement resulting in blurry images, noise at higher ISOs and slow frames per second rate. But otherwise really good image quality.

I have DX now with both DX and FX lenses. I’d like something with good low light capabilities for night shots, lightning, street scenes, etc. any opinions? Thanks!

I don't have any experience with the D800 but I do with the D810. I love it!! Yes, the file sizes are larger than the 24mb of my D750. I am currently using a 2012 Apple laptop and I load photos directly from the SD card using the SD slot and it really doesn't take much longer to load those bigger files. Most of the time I load directly from the computer card slot to an external hard drive but there is very little lag time sending to the external drive or bringing the files from there to the computer to be post processed.

Slight movement with any camera will cause blurry images. I have hand held this camera great results.

The photos I posted here were hand held with a Tamron 90mm macro on the D810. https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-712032-1.html#12566007

Best wishes on your decision.

I'm not sure about the 800 as I have 2 800e models. They are really great cameras. I would assume the 800 would perform extremely close to the 800e.

If it's a US model, I'd say it's worth the money by far.

Have a D800 and it has served me well. I bought used at a local brick and mortar store and it was my first FF camera. IQ is excellent. The AF system is functional, but dated. ISO sensitivity is 100-6400, which is functional, but limited compared to newer cameras. I’m not having any problems with the 36mp files and really love the detail I can capture with pro quality glass. It does have an AA filter, but you won’t notice it unless you go looking for it. I have both a D850 and Z9, but still use the D800 in good light situations mainly because it is a much simpler camera to use. IMO, it is a very good travel, landscape, portrait camera, maybe not so much of a sports / action camera.

I used one for a few years then graduated to 810 and later 850. It's a fine camera. The file size drawbacks are minor. If you prefer JPGs then a really good night street workaround is to take medium sized images at high ISOs. Image quality is particularly good when shooting off a tripod and utilizing good techniques. $500 is a very attractive price. In RAW I shot up to iso 1600 without any issues. Noise is there but manageable.

I owned one and can't say I had any issues. Have been upgrading with consecutive models.

The price sounds good especially with the low shutter count. Most appear to be selling for over $600.

I still own the D800 and use it as a backup/complimentary for my Z6. I will now only use it where I specifically want the extra mpix.

It's a great camera and the downsides you mention have never been noted as a concern to me. But I do prefer the advantages of mirrorless for the work that I regularly do.

The D800's ability to operate from AA batteries in the grip is another massive bonus for me living where camera battery purchase is a nightmare.

Used to own one (sold it as I was switching over to the mirrorless system) and it was a great camera.
As luvmypets stated, camera movement with any camera causes blurry images. It does have noise at higher ISOs - 3200-6400, but depending on what subject matter you are shooting, you may/may not need to shoot that high. Static subjects can be shot with lower ISO if you are willing to shoot slower shutter speed and possibly use a tripod.
The slow frame per second wasn't an issue for me - I still shot sports with it.

I shoot with a Z6 now - it is definitely a better camera for low light photography (and low light action/sports), but I don't shoot static subjects regularly. I shot with the D800 for many years and I never really had an issue with low light photography; the price is also quite reasonable. Good luck.

$500 is a great price!
I still use a D800 professionally.
Only issue I have is noise….
It’s louder than the D810.

The D800 was a marvel when it was introduced, and it's just as good today. If you have large file sizes, the files will take up more room on the computer. A gallon of milk will take up more room in the fridge than a quart. I bet that comment was written when the camera - and its large files sizes - was new. Many cameras now have large file sizes. For the price, with only 40k on it, it sounds like a good deal.
