Zoom for Sony a5000

I recently purchased a Sony A5000 with the regular 2 lenses that come with the package have enjoyed getting used to it. My previous camera was a point and shoot Fujifilm Fine Pix HS 30 EXR. I really enjoy the Sony, but I miss the Zoom lenses on the FujiFilm camera.

Can you recommend a comparable lens to the FujiFilm 30 X 24-720mm for the A5000?

Four choices to get "super zoom" reach on this body. "All-in-one" lenses top out at 300 mm (Tamron 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VXD Lens for Sony E). But if shooting JPEG only, you do have the option of using the camera's Clear Image Zoom feature (up to 2x) as well. Many threads here on Clear Image Zoom aka CIZ.

Sony FE 600mm F4 GM OSS w or w/o Sony 1.4 or 2.0 Tele Converter ($$$$$$$)

Sony FE 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS ($$$)

Tamron 150-500mm f/5-6.7 Di III VXD Lens for Sony E ($$)

Sigma 100-400mm f/5-6.3 DG DN OS Contemporary Lens for Sony E ($$)

FYI here's a catalog of lenses for APS-C e-mount bodies like the A5000:

and for Full Frame e-mount (which will work on APS-C bodies as well):

All the lenses listed here are for full-frame bodies and are telephoto lenses. Obviously they will work on a Sony a5000 but may not be what OP is looking for.

While there are many lens choices for Sony full-frame bodies, choices for APS-C are more limited. Here are some of the superzoom options, according to the B&H web site:

Tamron 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VXD
Tamron 18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 Di III VC
Sony E 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS
Sony E 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS LE

I have not used any of these lenses. The general zoom I have used and liked very much is the Sony E 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS.

I realize that. But the OP already has a kit lens that goes to 210 mm, and none of these even come close to the 700 mm equivalent of his old Fuji. I consider them "all-in-ones," not "super zooms." So I was assuming that the OP is looking for more telephoto reach, but you're right, he might just want fewer lens changes, but there's nothing that will replicate 24-700 mm on the A5000. The closest would be the Tamron 18-300 and CIZ.

The zoom range on some small cameras is amazing. This is due to the small size of the sensor. Your Sony APS-C sensor is much larger. The Fuji has a 35mm equilivent of 24-720mm. The APS-C equilivent would be 16-480mm. Sony makes an 18-200 (27-300 on APS-C) and a 24-240 (36-360 on APS-C) I use the 24-240 on a full frame Sony and am happy with it. The longest zoom that Sony makes is a 200-600mm (300-900mm on a APSC. That puppy will set you back $2K. They also make a 100-400mm (200-600 on APSC) That will cost you $2500. Best choice for your Sony would be the 18-200 or the 24-240 depending on whether you want more wide or more telephoto.
If you really need the 720mm zoom capability look for a used Fuji like you had ($2-300) or better yet a Panasonic LUMIX DC-ZS70S for around $300. It has more resolution then the Fuji and the advantage of fitting in your pocket. My wife has the ZS70 and I have a ZS100 and both produce excellent results.
Good luck in your search. I didn't mention third party product since I believe in using lenses made by my camera manufacturer. You may want to explore that option.

Check with "Bridges." He's selling off his Sony gear and has (had) a 24-240mm. I've had good luck with both buying and selling on this board.

??? As you stated, all those lenses are for either FF or APS-C.

There is no single lens for Sony e-mount cameras equal to that 24-720mm range. (The way Fuji and other manufacturers manage to make such wide ranging zooms for some of their non-interchangeable lens cameras is by using really tiny image sensors in the cameras... which don't make nearly as good images as the larger "APS-C" sensor in your a5000.)

You didn't specify what lenses you got with the camera. But the a5000 was typically sold with a 16-50mm "kit" lens. This is roughly equivalent to the "24-75mm range" on your Fuji camera.

Presumably the other lens you got with the a5000 is some sort of telephoto zoom. But without any more details, I can't even guess what that might be.

Since you likely already have a kit lens with your e5000 that meets the criteria of a "walk-around zoom" (see note below), I'm guessing you're wanting a fairly powerful zoom. That's usually the 2nd lens most people want.

To have "720mm equivalent" on your a5000, you need a lens with around 500mm focal length (actually 480mm, but nobody makes one of those).

The CLOSEST I can find are:

Tamron 70-300mm Di III RXD for $500 (somewhat short, "acting like 105-450mm" on your Fuji)
Sony FE 70-300mm G OSS for $1273 (also short and acting like 105-450mm on that Fuji)
or
Sigma 100-400mm DG DN OS for $899 (which will "act like 150-600mm" on your Fuji)
Sony FE 100-400mm GM OSS for $2499 (also will "act like 150-600mm")
or
Sigma 150-600mm DG DN OS for $1399 (which will "act like a 250-900mm" would on your Fuji)
Sony FE 200-600mm G OSS for $1998 (equiv. to 300-900mm on your Fuji).

Note that all these leave a "gap" between the 16-50mm (24-75) and 70mm (105), 100mm (150), 150mm (225) or 200mm (300). Out shooting in the real world this gap may not matter very much. But if it does, and the 2nd lens you already have doesn't fill the gap,you would need to consider yet another lens like a Sony E 55-210mm OSS for $300 (which "acts like approx. 80-315mm" on your Fuji).

Note: You say you need a "zoom"... But I think you mean you need a more powerful "telephoto" zoom. Many people think "zoom" = "telephoto", but it doesn't. In fact zoom just means a lens that has a range of focal lengths the user can choose among and adjust. There are different types of zooms, such as:
- ultrawide and wide angle zooms
- standard or "walkaround" zooms such as your 16-50mm, a moderate-wide-to-normal-to-short-telephoto
- telephoto zooms of various strengths: moderate to powerful
- extreme range/"do it all" zooms that compromise in a lot of ways such as slower focus and lower image quality

P.S. Your Fujifilm doesn't actually have a "24-720mm" lens. That's a "full frame equivalent". By using a very small sensor (4.8mm x 6.4mm) they make what is actually a 4.2-126mm focal length zoom "act like" something much more powerful and wide ranging. It is common practice to state "full frame equivalents" in this manner for non-interchangeable lens digital cameras, largely because they use many different sizes of sensors in those cameras and these "equivalents" allow for comparison of one model against another.

Your Sony a5000 also doesn't use a so-called full frame sensor. It uses an APS-C (15.6x23.7mm) that's a lot larger than the Fuji's. In my response above I converted from "equivalents" to actual focal lengths of actual zoom lenses that are actually available to purchase for use on your a5000 (and indicated the "full frame equivalent" in parens).

Love my Sony 18-105mm f4. Not cheap but a joy to use. The two kit lenses that came with my camera don't ever see the light of day anymore.

The a5000 also came with a two lens kit, the 16-50mm plus a 55-210mm.

Sony now has a 70-350 APS-C lens (105-525 FF equivalent), which is as close as you can get without a teleconverter. It is sharp (better than the 55-210 kit lens) and reasonably lightweight; sells for around $900. I love it on my a6000.

It does, though, lack the wide end end performance of the OP's old Fuji and some of the other e-mount candidates.
