The 16 - 50 is very small and extremely light. Optically it does a very nice job giving you an equivalent range of 24 - 75 mm. That's a range that is very popular for a lot of reasons.

The 50 - 250 as one would expect is larger and a bit heavier. The equivalent range of 75 - 375 mm isn't what I would call a birder's lens, but is certainly a nice moderate telephoto.

These two kit lenses and the Z DX 18-140 all have VR, which is good since the body has no IBIS.
One thing that makes me not love any of these lenses is the F/6.3 maximum aperture. That's because of my personal for blurry backgrounds. Although I must say the 16-50 did a nice job of blurring when close up.

Here are a couple of test shots I took with the Z50. The first 2 are with the 16-50, the last 2 with the 50-250.

Minimal cropping and light adjustment. My posted images are 600x800 or 800x600 pixels, depending how you look at them.

I know a lot of people are concerned because of the f/6.3 as you get to the long end, but quite frankly it doesn't make that huge a difference. Even if the lens was f/5.6 it would be unlikely that there would be a lot more background blur. Changing that aperture to f/5.6 would probably have made the lens somewhat bigger, heavier and more expensive.

There is also a 24 mm DX lens on Nikon's list of future Z primes. On my Z fc, the Z50's stablemate, I also use the very tiny and very inexpensive full frame 28mm f/2.8 and the 40mm f/2 primes. They are both very sharp in the center and are still sharp all the way to the edges on the z fc and Z50. Finally Voigtlander is developing a manual 23mm f/1.2 (YES, f/1.2) specifically for Nikon Z DX cameras. It'll have a 35 mm equivalent angle of view of 35 mm.

Just received an email from Nikon. They are running a sale on refurbished cameras and lenses. The z50 2 lens kit is on sale for $1000! I have purchased refurbished gear from Nikon and have never been disappointed.
