...We can't afford enough gas to get there. Average today is $6+ for the mid level grades of gas.

Gee, I am so glad I don't commute 44 miles one way to teach anymore.
My "new" car I got in early Oct 2019 is still less than 6000 miles. Well, yes, Covid-19 gets a lot of credit for that. The doctor every so often, curb side pickup at Sam's and the market plus a drive through about 2x a week. The wife has done about the same in her car in that same time frame.

$4.09 here but I don't go much at all. Too much to do right here at home. I fill up and it lasts me from a month and a half to almost 2 months.

And where do you think the power for the Tesla comes from?

Maybe natural gas, maybe oil, maybe coal, maybe nuclear, maybe hydro, maybe wind, maybe solar…

Regular in NC is about $4.19, premium is $4.94. No idea about diesel, but got to be tough on independent truckers. One thing for sure, if natural gas and gasoline stay this high, more and more consumers will be moving to heat pumps, electric cars and solar on their roof. Our natural gas heating bill was about 50% higher than last year. That makes me consider changing my A/C outside unit to a heat pump so I can choose the cheapest energy and considering a plug in hybrid.

I just wish the politicians and bureaucrats had to pay for their own gas. Maybe they would stay home and stop passing laws just to show how busy they are and how much they deserve their pay and perks.

I take your point(s), but seems to me the blame for these huge price increases belongs to the oil/gas companies.

Does Harry Potter recharge it with his wand? Otherwise that electricity has to be generated somehow.
Overall the US's electricity comes from:
1. Fossil fuels 60.8%
2. Nuclear 21.8%
3. Renewables 20.1% and that includes hydro & burning biomass wastes - and those renewables in most cases are backed up by older generator plants that are offline but available to replace or augment the renewables (heavy clouds, smoke, night time = no solar), drought may cut or stop hydro, calm weather or they are off line - ice and snow keeping the blades from rotating = no wind generation

Yes, I know that is over 102% but that was the stats I found. Maybe they are counting some of the backup sources from old plants that are mostly shut down on standby. Or maybe the statisticians graduated from less than top tier schools.

Does Harry Potter recharge it with his wand? Othe... (show quote)

And that is exactly why, unless new technology such as fusion becomes (finally) viable, we better start building more nuclear plants (and finally open the National repository for spent fuel). Or we can eventually freeze in the dark and walk. There is an end to fossil, and these price increases are just the beginning..

Also most people are not just going to the store for "milk" (or something else) they plan for at least a week's eating and buy it all at once.
Because of the possibility of the "Big One" destroying the power grid and supply chain we have kept a couple of months of rice, beans, canned foods* and boxed foods and bottled water or other drinks like Gatorade for years but now we added a chest freezer and keep it stocked with foods that can be frozen. If the Big One hits or the power grid goes down that stuff gets eaten first.
And I have one gas & one charcoal BBQ grill plus a couple of camp stoves - one burns bottled liquid fuel and the other uses small propane cylinders both of which I keep a supply of. And we have both a fireplace and a fire pit that can burn just about anything if you are careful and can get fuel.

*about half of that is non-condensed soups that we can actually eat right out of the can or add rice or dried beans, let soak and then heat.
